It's always nice when we can get the 'work' part of our day out of the way before noon! Now who can tell me the best way to secure my MTB in the back of my truck when I stop at gas stations

I usually break in 4x4 on the ground instead of pavement. Even after re-gear, drive the truck to the park then engage 4x4 for a few miles. Back to 2wd before getting on the road.

10 feet of anchor chain from the USS Iowa. String the chain thru the wheels and frame then padlock to the bed tie downs.

Any update on this? No idea your tool situation or mechanical aptitude but incase anyone searches in the future:
Betting the case exploded as a result of something in the front diff.

    • Jack the front of the truck up and start trying to spin things. If it's locked you found out why your transfer case exploded. The weird part is the front diff is always spinning so it "should" have locked up before then.

    • If evreything moves, then it may be the rear end, check the same things.
    • Check to see if there is fluid in the diffs
    • If the rear end spins then something grenaded in your transfer case.
My trans popped out of gear leaving a stop light and it sounded like a damn bomb went off and then like a cement mixer and would not go into 1st gear and I had to physically hold it in evrey gear but 4th. Turns out I had a seal let go in my trans and it was running without fluid for an unknown period of time and went bang. Same thing could have happened in your diff.

I believe diffs and Xfer case are splash lube systems.

This is a Friday thread for sure. Engaging 4hi in a straight line on pavement will do nothing to harm your truck. Someone straight up claiming that mismatched tire wear will cause his gearing to explode because of 4hi on pavement?

Pretty much cover to cover. First brand new vehicle, first 4x4 truck, I thought RTFM might help me understand how it works, what I need to do to keep it running for the next 20 years, and what the No-Really-You're-Gonna-Break-It stuff might be. I mostly trust the Toyota engineers over TW engineers.

Yeah, I wont have this truck for more than 5 most likely as that's when I always get a new vehicle. But, always a great idea to read it over if you have the time or are interested

My guess is that its either diffrent gears installed or 4wd on pavement. Even in a straight line it can cause wind up.

"When traveling with part time 4WD on high traction surfaces like asphalt, concrete, etc. handling of the vehicle will become unsafe (understeer) and the "driveline binding" will eventually cause component failures. Part time 4WD should not be used on high traction surfaces! Even when going straight most of the time, slight differences in tire pressure front to rear or vehicle load resulting in different axle speeds will cause "wind up" and eventually damage."

I drive stuff until the wheels fall off. 375k on my B2200 over 20+ years, and 150k on a Subaru over 10ish years. That Mazda is still kicking as a wood/water/whatever hauler at the FIL ranch house.
