Don’t forget that “shipping” isn’t free and adds at least $750 if not more to the price.
On top of that, then having to deal with the ca DMV and smog. Unless there is at least 4K price difference out of state I wouldn’t do it

Everybody's financial situation is different. To me saving money is like a cocaine habit.

Having bought many many new and used cars last 10 years, outside of CA, for me it is 100% worth it.

For vehicles I register in CA:

    Shipping $800
    Vin verify - free
    Smog $50
CA DMV -empty during covid (27 minutes)
Non Covid - appointment, in and out in 1 hour.

My used Non CA purchases - AAA, no need for DMV

Is that worth saving thousands and thousands of dollars? TO me, yes. To you, maybe not.

We all value our time differently :)

    ---------------------------------------

For CA vehicles, that I keep registered in Northern States. Its even more easy, don't even pay the CA sales tax, never have to go to DMV (SD/Montana does everything over phone and mail) and the savings are literally bags of money :)

Not to give business to CA stealerships = priceless.
Not to give taxes to CA when possible = orgasmic

The internet has revolutionized buying, and has given the power to us. Are there neighbors of mine buying CTR over $5,000 MSRP and PRo over 7,000$ MSRP? Sure. But I also have many friends/family buying in Wisconsin and Idaho and not paying CA prices, when the internet has equalized a lot of things.

We do have the power. How we choose to exercise it, is solely in our discretion.

He (@maxmk8) means shipping TO your home. You have to pay for that.

As in when I bought a Lexus in MA, shipping to my house in Los Angeles, isn't included ;)

It really depends on the situation, as I mentioned in my post there is a downside to buying out of state, which is shipping+ dealing with smog etc, there is a time value of money as well. Maybe your DMV appointment was 27 min, but for me it was 2 hrs + trying to get an appointment etc. It was overall a huge waste of time.

Unfortunately you pay the $995 shipping destination fee from the manufacturer to the dealer.

I found two dealerships in Oregon that are willing to work with me as an out-of-state buyer. Apparently, they do a lot of business with CA residents. Each has one Tacoma coming in the next couple of months that match what I'm looking for and they are offering around $3k under MSRP. This price includes the current Toyota incentives which are a lot better in Oregon.

I contacted Marin Toyota and they are willing to put in an order for me, but won't budge from MSRP - any incentives at time of delivery and I'd have to wait ~4 months or more.

The Oregon dealers are 375 miles from me, so flying up and driving down is pretty much a non-issue.

I wish I had friends up in the northern states. The best I can do is register outside of the SF area. This alone saves me almost a thousand dollars according to the DMV calculator.

My question to you: If the dealer completes all the DMV paperwork, am I still required to get a smog in CA? Does the smog abatement fee not apply when bringing new vehicles into the state? One of the best things (to me) about owning a new vehicle is not having to worry about smog every year or two and if buying out of state takes that away, I'll have to consider that in the overall package.

Buying a Tacoma is more of a hassle than a PS5!

Buying a Tacoma is more hassle than a Ferrari Superfast! And the funny thing is your neighbor can't tell the difference between gardener special $24,000 tacoma and a $45,000 Tacoma (trust me I have had both) LOL

At least Ferrari gets you respect (though not much in SF/LA) :)

Yes, you will have to smog it.

If you buy out of state, you don't get the 5 year free smog. So 3x$50 should be considered if you are keeping track of your nickels and dimes.

Fly and drive in OR is no problem. I wasn't willing to get on a plane in Dec/Jan, thus I had to take the "NO" from the OR dealers, which was fine by me. Funny thing there are rebates in other states, which don't apply to us, but if you buy from them, they figure out a way to do it. I know I saw that in my paperwork, they applied "rebates" that weren't for CA residents :)

I have no friends in Northern States either (unless you count TW friends) :)

Screw Toyota of Marin! Tried buying a Land Cruiser HE from them, what a world class idiots those guys are.

I just have this allergy to smog check stations that I developed when I was a struggling student trying to get my bucket registered. CA sure loves screwing it's people. If I could go the rest of my life without dealing with a smog check station and a tow yard, I'll be happy.

Funny thing about the 24k tacoma thing, that's how I got sucked into this. I look on the Toyota website and it shows pictures of a 40k build with a price tag of just $24,000! and then under it in small font it reads "StArTiNg At." And when you live in CA, it doesn't end there. You come to terms with having to spend almost double what you thought the original price was and then get slapped in the face with a $5k mark-up at your local dealer.

    Hi all,

This is my first post here, and I'm in the market for an SR double-cab 4x4 aka the cheapest DC4x4 option.

I've been browsing through a lot of the posts here, but haven't seen many posts about the truck I'm looking for.

I live along the CA central coast, so I figure I might have to travel for a good deal.

Should I expect to find any savings on the cheap model? Or should MSRP kind of be expected (I'll be financing, so the cash offers won't help me out). Thanks!

How recently did you order this? And what estimated date did they give you? I'm thinking about doing an order too and I'm curious about the current lead time.

Use Truecar to see what others are paying as a range. It is nice because it gives you your areas pricing and how much of a discount people are seeing. In general the people who are getting some type of discount in CA are ones buying trucks that are on the lot. If you have to order it you are somewhat SOL. For example, here in San Diego, the lots have decent amount of SR and SR5 models in 2WD. Truecar shows them getting 3-5% off MSRP. TRD Offroad and up and no discounts to be had. Most are accounted for before they even hit the lot.

I just ordered a TRD Offroad, DCLB, Army Green, Premium package, Advanced Tech, LED headlights/Foglights last weekend. Was told to expect 2-3 months. That was after trying to find one for the past 4 months in stock somewhere and not spoken for. I finally bit the bullet.

Full MSRP minus whatever Toyota specific incentives are available at the time. Today for example I believe San Diego dealers have a $500 discount incentive. I added the Bed Mat, All weather floor mats and door sil protectors and the total on the quote was $45,503 I believe. Oh here it is. Yes, $45,503.

I'm not proud of paying MSRP but it is what the market is calling for here and I see no signs of that changing.

This was from November 2020. While I didn't get the Voodoo blue one listed in this ad, I did get one just like it in MGM with an additional $500 off, so just under 41k.

Thanks, I'll check that out. I guess it makes sense that the lower-trim models would be the ones that might see a little more discount, since they likely make so many more of them (and they end up sitting on the lot a little longer). I've heard good things about Costco Auto too. I should probably give that a shot too. Seems like that one is somewhat hit or miss depending on the connected dealer though.
