Somewhere in the midst of all this stupid bickering over a topic covered countless times on TW is some potentially good cautionary information on what to check for when upgrading your gears.

Transfer cases just don't explode, this reminds me of the time my friend was sticking a switch blade in a box fan to make noise, and well he went a little deep with it on high and a fan blade just exploded making a hell of a racket. His dad busted in the room and asked WTF was going on and all he could say was I don't know it just exploded. His dad grabbed the fan and said no more fans for you buddy.

I think his dad knew that he was dicking around with it before a blade came off like that movie Alive

FWIW i’ve forgotten to disengage 4wd after leaving the woods before and drove all the way home, went to do a 3 point turn in front of my house and felt it bind up

I turned back the way the truck wanted to go in order to unwind it and disengaged 4hi...

i cant see how OP’s diff would grenade from driving a straight line for a short distance

No no no. I'd rather listen to the engineers who told me the truck will self destruct if put in 4hi on anything with better traction than ice.

Update: I called the shop this morning and he has sent a tow truck to come and get it. We'll see the culprit of the problem when it gets there. The shop owner seemed friendly and concerned right off the bat and offered the tow truck right away.

To clarify a few things, I was driving like a sane cautious person in suburbia America on my way to panda express to grab dinner, nothing crazy, no hooligan stuff. I just had my gears changed 250> miles ago and want to make sure the fronts got a little time on them before I actually go offroad in the future. Engaged 4hi drove few hundred feet, truck has awful sounding failure. My tires are brand new, all the same size nothing weird. I was driving in a straight line. My truck has run flawless for 45,000 miles until this point.

After all the comments on here I'm beginning to question my own IQ, but my gut tells me I did nothing wrong and this is a freak accident.

Reminds me of when I took apart a fan when I was little, somehow I thought it was a good idea to use my dads wire strippers to cut into some fan control wiring while it was plugged in. After a loud pop and bright flash, I had to go reset the breaker outside, then button up the fan and play dumb when my dad asked why it no longer worked haha

Occam's razor my friend. The simplest answer is almost always going to be right. You just regeared and your gears blew up. It was the regearing.

$1400 for a zero time rebuilt trans and a weekend of my time to swap it. I drove it for a month like that, it spewed a qt of fluid a day out of it, but it was my daily at the time.
