Let me give you a little inside information. If you have a car loan with any of the big U.S. and Japanese players most likely those loans are being processes on systems written in CICS, COBOL, and Assembler. The same goes for checking accounts, IRA, and certificate of deposits with megabanks like the B of A and the likes. But the core products really haven't changed much since the late 1980s. Now there are front-end systems that are written in MS .Net and the latest GUI technology. But the real work goes on mega IBM ZOS systems.

The big boys are still running CICS, COBOL, and Assembler. I'm talking about a ~6 BILLION dollar a year software business.

I come from a family of intellectuals on my dad side, he was a professor and both his parents were as well. Everyone in the family suspected me to follow the same route given how well I did in school as a kid.

I'm glad I took after my mom with her families blue collar lineage. Being able to work with my hands has never left me short of work ... it's just broken down my body after all these years of manual labor:laughing:

Thats actually really comforting. We'd be all doomed if it were written in C and running on AWS

Looks like there is some support for writing and compiling COBOL on linux. Hmmmm.

If I were doing it all over again, i'd seriously going into a trade. Desk work is indoors, usually, but the stress and lack of movement gets to you after a while.

I really want like a part time job doing what I do now, and a part time job doing wiring. That seems like a nice balance.

There was/is a very good COBOL compiler and run platform for the PC named Realia. When I worked for Time Warner, I used it to maintain and develop a COBOL system that was running on both a PC (in Amsterdam) and the Warner Brothers mainframe in Burbank CA. The compiler was actually very good. I found several bugs on the PC platform that were latent "once in a blue moon" issues on the mainframe. So so it produced better quality CICS code than could be done with the IBM compiler.

It may be free to download for a hobbyist.

At least you seem to be doing well for yourself given that kind of struggle:thumbsup:

My grandfather's parents and family emigrated from Scotland to get Canadian citizenship for fighting in WWI.. his father was a plumber and his mother and aunt ran a grocery store, he was a kid through the great depression in WA and watching them struggle made him pursue a career in academia. Ending up doing well for himself. My dad attempted to follow in his footsteps and struggled most of his adult life finding work after my parents business failed. Me watching him made me avoid going into academia

That sounds like a good balance and work that is much easier than heavy equipment repair... there are days I miss doing that and days I'm so thankfully I don't have to lift camshafts that are as tall as I am
