Is that a wood handled sledge? If so, I don’t doubt it broke quick. Hammer handles these days are dog shit even at better stores than Harbor Freight.

I inspect each handle before I buy now.

You are so right on that one haha. The more space you have, the more you fill it and you eventually run out of space at some point and don’t have the perfect place for everything haha. The extra tool storage certainly helps me feel like there is closer to perfect space for everything haha.

I appreciate it. It’ll be a good small tool box for rolling out to the driveway to work on my truck and other peoples and not have to run back and forth to the garage to the big box as much

Safety training is not training. If anything it is to bring awareness to dangers most people don't know exist. The safest shop I worked at did safety training classes every single year. 1-2 hours/day for 1-2 weeks. The classes covered everything from not cutting towards yourself with a knife, electrical energy potential, caustic chemicals, inhalation hazards, rotary potential, and even assuming that all bodily fluids contain contagens. Safety training is not about making people comfortable doing dangerous jobs, it's about educating people on the dangers they might not otherwise know exist, and therefore make them less likely to do what they are not trained to do. To that end safety classes should educate you on how to protect yourself from the dangers, not on how to perform the job. That is an important distinction that most shops don't make. They want to compress as much as they can into as short an investment as possible and get you back to making them money.

The worst hand injury I’ve seen was the result of working too many hours and being tired. CALOSHA hit the company with a huge fine. Well deserved I might add. I hope your “accident” is reported and investigated.

I don’t have and wood handle at work any more I bought all Mac anti vibe they are all steel ! Pricey but worth every penny .Stanley Proto J1303AVPS 3-Piece Anti-Vibe Ball Pein Hammer Set (32, 40, 48 oz.) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H1L10EG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_STSFHTK50S8TAGSW839K?_encoding=UTF8https://www.mactools.com/en-us/Stri...a65-89c6-a30a014f137f/Anti-Vibe-Sledge-Hammer.

There are two links above one is ball pein hammer and one is small sledge hammer it’s amazing they don’t transfer the vibration to you hand like a wood handle does there actually very nice to use , when I first bought them I compared a wood handle to these hitting a solid steel anvil, and I immediately bought a set . Took all the wood handle home , I still use them but when the handles break they become paper weights . I’ve have all brands of wooden handled hammer break and it’s pretty violent.

How can you run out of space when all you need to do is buy another tool chest? ;)

    I'm doing good - I haven't bought one for a year...

Man all this injury talk gives me anxiety. I have 800 students in my shops every day and I have to keep on top of them. We have done a good job for 6 years, but it never ends. Also tool buying for home really cuts down when it’s your job and all the toys are at work now.

True, I guess I have been collecting more micrometers and some watch makers tools. Just pulled back on power tools and wood shop tools.

My high school welding class got shut down and the teacher fired when a student ground off his finger because he did not follow the safety rules. Most injuries are the result of bad habits, so it's best to create good habits early on. The teacher had actually done a significant amount of teaching on shop safety, even going so far as to demonstrate some of the dangers using non-human analogs in moving equipment (carrots, chicken drumsticks, beef ribs). Apparently that wasn't enough. Every shop i've worked in has had at least one person that had been significantly maimed on the job at one point in their lives from missing fingers, eyes, ear, hands, toes, a foot, an entire arm, and 2 deaths. Most of these injuries were the result of bad habits that had been repeated daily for years.

That said it is an employers responsibility to keep their equipment safe. Most employers only do safety training only because they can get reductions in their insurance costs if they do. In reality safety is YOUR responsibility. Don't rely upon anyone else to keep your safety in mind, because so often your safety is at best their number 2 priority. I have never met anyone with significant injury who didn't wish they had made safety a higher concern for themselves before being injured instead of being left with a permanent reminder going forward of how important it is. But there is a bright side to being injured at work. Losing a hand will get you a check. A whopping $10,000!!!!!

You should try one , I thought the same thing it’s night and day the vibration you get down the handle into your hand from a wooden handle vs the anti vibe so much so I had to buy a few !5ABE7AE9-E136-4BBC-8B17-8EB77858491E.jpg

Price of digits goes up considerably when they are those of college students. Before my time a student had the experience of temporary removal of 3 fingers by a table saw. They where found and reattached, and she regained the use of them. The schools insurance paid out 6 figures even though she had removed the blade guard and was using the saw improperly. Safety is the reduction of risk not the elimination of risk. We now only use table saws with safety stops, but I teach as if the stops are not there. We have incident reports for every injury and we have walk throughs with the class after even cuts and kickbacks to teach why they happen. So far only one bad injury on my watch and it was operator error mixed with bad luck, but it was ok in the end. It is a never ending battle with new troops every semester and the old troops getting complacent after a few years. But, 5 years and they are out so if they can make it through, they are out in the world sitting behind a desk and I won’t have to worry about them anymore.
