I Failed my emissions test because of a crack in my muffler that is as long as my thumbnail. the shop wants 365 to put a new one on which is ridiculous. apparently it is illegal to fix a muffler also. Idk why. So i need some options because I cant afford this right now.

    1. Cut the pipe before the muffler then just run new where the muffler was and connect the front and back halves. This would be the easiest and cheapest but i would then be illegal for having no muffler.

    2. Go to advanced auto or napa and buy a new pipe and muffler for 250 then pay someone to weld it on. Would probably still cost about 350....

    3. Jam some JB weld up in there and hope it blocks the leak enough they wouldnt hear it

    4. Try another inspection station.

Right now I am thinkin number 3 and 4 are the best options. anyone else have any ideas?

I paid around $120 for a Quikflo SS exhaust system from Napa. Not high performance, but I installed it myself and it passed emmissions. It's fine for what I need.

Did you need a welder? I know how to weld i just do not have easy and/or cheap/free access to one right now. otherwise this would be fixed in about 5 minutes

Nope, I had to beat the crap out of the old one to get it free. The new one bolted right up w/ a muffler clamp. I probably will have it tacked up eventually, but it passed PA emissions as is.

I would be careful hammering on the old muffler so not to break something loose in the catalic converters.

How did the pipe size match up on the quickflo exhaust? Got a picture of the muffler?

I was hitting straight back on the muffler and with the section of intermediate pipe between the muffler and exhaust, I doubt enough shock reached the cat to do any damage. Pipes matched up. I do notice a little condensation dripping now and then, but again it passed the sniffer, so it served its purpose.

Selling my 96 Tacoma to fund the FJ80 build up.
Find another shop ~ ask around here in the South East Section of the forum. Their are a few post related to local NOVA folks. Luckily I'm in Central VA and we have no seperate emissions inspection. Down here I could cut the exhaust off right behind the cab (Passenger compartment) with no muffler and it would be legal for inspection.

Forget damaging the cats ~ My truck had a hair line crack around the passenger exhaust manifold flange (on the engine side of the flange). Any extra hammering / vibration would have surely cracked the exhaust manifuld loose from the front pipe on my truck. Luckily I was able to catch it and weld it up during my frame swap.
