Do us a favor and give us some feedback on your truck after owning it for 150k. How's it held up so far?

No real issues so far, although I’ll admit it’s been nearly all highway miles. I replaced the battery late last year/early this year (can’t remember when exactly) as it finally died. I retorqued, drained and filled the differential as it had the leaking issue some third gens have had.

Other than that, and oil all other fluid is original. I am on my fifth or sixth set of tires. I also have new rotors and pads to put on. To be fair the pads could likely get more mileage if I wanted as they still have some material left. However I have towed trailers quite a few times and until recently didn’t have a trailer brake controller, so my rotors have a lot of visible hot spots in them. So since I will have the calipers off to replace the rotors I don’t see the point in reinstalling likely glazed pads.

Now that I’m thinking about it, my radio did malfunction twice in one day. It randomly turned off, and then the screen turned on with the start up sequence as if I had turned the truck off and then started it again. I can’t remember exactly if this was prior to my battery failing but I would assume so. No dash lights or anything else came on at the time. It wasn’t raining or anything else that could have shorted a connection. I made a mental note to look into it when it happened again and it simply never did, so I forgot until now.

Aside from making the monthly payments, the truck has brought me nothing but joy. I don’t mind wrenching on my own vehicles, but it’s been nice owning something where routine part replacement wasn’t mandatory.

You should get 300k~400k with 10k oil changes. At that point your RIG will be using oil. You will not get 1,000,000. miles with 10k oil changes.

I ran my 22R engine to 590k miles. It burned a quart a week after 500k ish. but still ran great. I did once per year oil changes for 19 years.

If I'd done oil changes every 6 months, it may have still been on the road, and not burning oil(IMO).

A good friend had a 85 4runner, he got over 900k miles on the stock block/crank/bearings/rods/pistons and rings. He was anal about oil changes every 4~6 months.

So it will make a difference, if your a kind of drive it till the wheels fall off sort of person(I am).

I change my oil every 5k and I make no apologies for it. And besides, it’s in the owners manual, followed by science and facts for those who care to do the due diligence and research.

It matters not what others who didn’t pay for my truck think, because I have a feeling they won’t be paying for any repair bills for camshaft, timing chain adjuster or sludge deposit damage that can come from infrequent oil changes either, so there’s that.

Ive always wondered about Shell Rotella. Myself personally I use the Costco 0W-20 Full Syn after reading about it on BITOG and seeing it at $25(?) for 10qts at my local warehouse.

Has anyone tried using 5w-30 in this motor? It’s the oil weight spec’d by Toyota for this motor when it’s used overseas. Just curious if anyone has tried it.

I also think there is a difference in 10k mile oil changes and once a year changes. Before I was laid off I was putting on around 30k miles a year, so I was changing the oil at minimum three times in a year. When it’s simply changed once a year, the oil sits, and sludge has a much easier time accumulating. During the combustion cycle, fumes are able to leak into the crankcase which actually makes the oil acidic. Modern synthetics have additives to prevent this, but it only works for so long. So that would be another negative to simply changing the oil once a year. There is also a big difference in conventional and synthetic oil, the second being far superior in most instances.

This is from my fiancé’s 17 4R. I don’t have a 3.5 so I can’t say anything about it, I have a 19 2.7. What I find strange is that in PR you’re able to use all the way up to 15W-40! But it says you better change that 5-20 out ASAP if you’re stateside. Doesn’t make much sense to me. Summers in the southeast get pretty hot, so I’ll be using 5w-30 from like June - September in my truck from now on.

Vehicles made for different operating environments may have different oil recommendations, even at stateside.
As an example, vehicles made for the California market, often have added emission equipment that may change certain recommendations for that market and the same may apply for vehicles designated for use in other areas such as in PR.

I myself, would go with the recommendation for the market I bought the vehicle in. If bought in PR, I’d use that, If bought stateside, I’d use that because it makes more sense to me otherwise it's confusing if that makes any sense.

They had the 4 pack of 5 quart jugs on sale recently. For $47. Came out to $2.35/qt. Even with having to get a new Costco membership, if I don’t buy another thing from there for the next year, my two years worth of motor oil was like $3.13/qt. Shipped to me. I’m not complaining.
