Spent the night in the ER with my old pup. He’s 11. Took a turn for the worst in the last day or so.
Left eye is swollen and red, causing his third eyelid to swell and protrude, basically rendering his left eye useless. Vet seems to believe it has to be a mass/tumor, abscess of some sort behind the eye and in the socket. It’s also causing some bloody discharge/mucus from the nostrils.

Of course, we can opt for X-rays, mri’s, scans and all that other invasive stuff. Vet can’t give us a definitive answer as to what all this may or may not provide as far as what’s exactly causing this.

Wife and I are at a crossroads we’ve never experienced. This sucks. All I want is the old man to be comfy. He’s eating and drinking, and he perks up every now and again.

When we finally got home, gave him one of his pain/relaxation meds she prescribed and put him to bed. I was silently hoping he’d fall asleep and take this most difficult decision out of my hands.

I guess today will be a final observation to see what direction we head. The old man is simply snoring right now, and that’s comforting.

Only liked for the sleeping and snoring. Hate when we have to make that decision to keep our babies out of pain.

Maybe the infection will go. If it doesn’t maybe removing his infected eye is a possibility. If he is healthy otherwise that could be a option.

Sorry to hear this. It's a tough decision. We had to make that same decision a little less than a year ago. I still think about Zack on a regular basis. Good luck.
