I recently noticed a leak in my drive way. Crawled underneath my truck to find oil on my undercarriage. Took it into the dealership and what do you know!? A RMS replacement....at 94K miles and only 3 years old...WTH Toyota? This may be the begging of a 3rd Gen trend....please keep en eye out and let us know. Hopefully no one else has this issue.

How many millions of engine revolutions is that?

Guess that’s my 23 years of active duty service coming out. Rear Main Seal (RMS). Acronyms tend to be a common second language in our line of work.

I think you missed my point. A rear main seal going out at 94k is nothing. The engine has spun millions of times. The seal wearing out is nothing to be concerned about.

Rear mains can fail on anything, it's not common on any 2GR but its also not super rare.

Well, my 2007 had 230K without any issues. The RMS shouldn’t have gone out under 100K miles if you ask me. That’s an expensive fix for a truck that shouldn’t have that type of “wear and tear”. And yes, I didn’t quite catch what you were getting at on earlier post. Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah it'll probably be pretty pricey, but it's all labor costs. The seal itself is only like 7 bucks. At least it's just the seal. Small block Chevy engines used to need a full rebuild at 100k.

Rear main seals used to be made out of rope, they leaked constantly

These Toyota engines are for the most part, excellently sealed compared to other manufacturers. Chevys start leaking as soon as they drive off the assembly line.

Its still a good truck. Fix it and move on.

Well if it makes you feel any better... Toyota revised the rear seal to strengthen them so the new one you will get will last a lot longer.

There have been a few people reporting leaks like yours, I think the lowest mileage was in the 40-50k range (but don't hold me to that).

Does not seem to be a "happens all the time problem" or it would have ended up like the transmission shifting and HP threads....

But does seem to pop up every couple months here

Thanks, I fixed and moved on already. I wanted to bring awareness to the problem. After paying for a TRD Pro, you would think that Toyota would be aware of it. Not to mention wanted to make sure no one else is having issues Incase there was a recall and people could get their $1,500.00 back. Appreciate the info.

Chronic overfilling the oil pan (most shops do)? Failing to use a "high mileage" oil at around 75,000 miles? 10,000 - 15,000 mile oil changes instead of 3,000-5,000? Switching back and forth between conventional and synthetic oil?

Back in the day synthetic used to shrink the seals on higher mileage vehicles and owners would get leaks. Most of the manufacturers now put add packs that eliminate that, but I'm sure all oils vary to a degree.

If your dealer charged $1500 for RMS they’re ripping off their customers.

I wouldn’t be happy at a rear main leak less than 100k miles and only 3 years old. But glad you got it fixed. It’s not the worst thing in the world.

Thank you, I was not aware we had a problem on the V-6 RMS. If it happens to me, I won't pay up, I'll simply trade for a more reliable engine, whatever that is

You maybe on to something there

As far as I know, the main reason for the leaks back then had to do more with the mixing of regular and or synthetic. That is supposedly been "fixed" now.

I think I'll just keep using the same brand/type oil forever till death do us apart> Mobil 1 0W20

I'll let you all know what happens....

Maybe if it was some euro trash car, but 94k on a Toyota i'd be kicking over the neighbor's garbage cans just to tell him about it

I’m in Las Vegas, everything I’ve found out here is triple the costs compared to down south or the east coast. (Unfortunately).
