Couple of Issues after getting stuck in the mud

Ok Christmas Day I went and took my mother out riding around around, (she had a jeep when younger and really did alot of off roading). Well I went and got stuck pretty bad.

When we finally got my truck out of the mud, alot of my speedometer doesn't work, along with my gas gauge not staying steady, check engine light, ABS, and Brake lights are on. Before I go get a mechanic to check it out I just though I'd see if anyone else has had this issue or may know what it might be.

The truck seems to be running fine and no weird sounds or the such...

Don't worry, we're just curious incase we ever go through the same thing.

 

ABS sensors covered in mud or you have broken wires is part of your problem im sure.
That is why the ABS and brake light, and possibly the CEL is on. Or you knocked off an emissions hose for the evap system. That could be your CEL.

Edit: Did you bottem out the truck real hard and drop it on the frame or something?

 

I would check the wiring harness for each speed sensor at each wheel for the ABS. Possible chance that one got pulled loose while pushing through the mud. For the speedo issue, the sensor will be on the T-case somewhere. I'd take a peek underneath and make sure it is still connected. Also take a look around your fuel tank and try to locate the fuel level sending unit. Make sure the harness is still connected.

Im a 1st gen guy so I cant point out exactly where every component is located, but this should give you a good start.

Everything I mentioned will trigger the current lights you are getting. Good Luck.

I busted my hitch wiring plug on the rear bumper offroading once and bent the metal tabs - the tabs touching on the plug made the shifter lights on my dash act all funny. I dont think this would affect the engine/oil/abs lights but worth a check.

 

Any chance anyone could point out where these wires/sensors are? Still quite a newbie when it comes to this stuff.

I'de wash all the mud off underneathe and just follow the wires that go to the sensors near the brake rotors.

 

The sensor for the speedo should be really close to the rear output drive shaft on the tcase. You may have to remove the skidplate (if equipt) to get a better look. There may be 1 or 2 wires running to the sensor. From the sounds of your description a wire may be partially broken, or the harness might have been pulled out a bit at the sensor causing the intermittent problem.

Like twfsa said, give the undercarriage a good spray down to clean out some mud. It will make troubleshooting alot easier!

Wash the mud off and take it to the dealer. The cleaner you make it, they will be happier, and you will get treated better.

 

my truck has done all of the same except for the speedo and i just washed it all off real good with a pressure washer and it seemed to fix it all. with exception my belt was sherred and my radiator hose came off

 

She was just laughing at me the whole time... and taking pictures.

Ill get out tomorrow and clean it off and check those wires.

Speedometer and ABS would indicate wheel speed sensors. Gas gauge indicates tank sending unit. Brake lights indicates...well, 'unknown'. Combine them all together and you get:

Under-body wiring harness. Torn, sitting on an exhaust pipe, whatever...but somehow damaged.

 

I suppose it could be year-specific, but I went looking for info on the speed sensor in the 2nd gen Tacoma, and what I found was that speed is calculated by one of the computers based on individual wheel speed sensors (ABS sensors). There is no transmission mounted speed sensor (not one that is designed to sense output shaft speed and send it to the speedometer, anyway).
