The oem trifolds are hard not vinyl and the plastic bed rail caps have a different design with cutouts for mounting the cover.

Canvas vs aluminum/fiberglass though. Tri fold is nice but the hard ones are awesome. I saw a hard tri fold for 200 a few weeks ago but most are in the 300-400 range used. Soft tri fold are typically in the 150 to 200 range used. That one he’s asking 400. Sure it’s basically new but there are better deals out there.

I just looked it up on Yota website. Apparently "Soft Tonneau Cover" is on the list of Tacoma accessories. I didn't see a hard cover, so something changed in recent years.

I wonder if they found it was better than hacking up the bed to install the hard one. Or it’s just easy for this to be port installed?

Well. That blows. Even as someone who doesn't like tonneau covers for my use (not that they're bad, just don't fit my use case at all), the hard tri fold is the way to go if you're going to get one. Roll up is good too. Soft tri fold is the worst of both worlds though.

Ah - forgot they did do that to the bed rails. That might be part of it, less effort = more profit. Or, they did a business study on it - with how many people were buying these things, was it worth it to have the procedure and tools to make the bed rails for it OEM. No - pass it off to the customer. Their problem now :notsure:

 Jinkies! I didn't see that. That's shenanigans. Say what you will about RC, they're a good baseline. This looks like a hard trifold for 650. First google result, I'm sure it goes up from there (and down a bit but probably not much).

Seeing some roll ups for 250$ range, tri fold soft probably 300 if I had to ballpark it - OEM is just a rebranded one anyway.

Who wants an OEM hard trifold tonneau? I’m working on upgrading to a 2021 that has it on there and I’d prefer a soft roll up cover.

So as a joke I looked up a 21 sienna was going to post a picture with some comment like "y'all got 3 giblets you need one of these". But even better now is how hard Toyota is pushing the "off road lifestyle" image on everything

    upload_2021-3-14_15-0-27.jpg

 these are the first images on google when you search for a sienna.

Anyway, get a soccer-dad-mobile I guess that's the joke :boink:

The soft tri-fold has it uses. If you do not fish stuff out of the back of the bed often then when it is folded in place open it is not an inconvenience that it still covers a third of the bed. In fact, sometimes it works out well since I stow stuff out of the wind in that last covered third but the rest of the bed is open for bulky loads. It is much quicker and easier to open than a roll up and I do not have to adjust the Velcro on the side when I close it. It is much cheaper than a hard tonneau which was important to me when I bought it since I was unsure how much I would like it so I didn’t want to invest big bucks if I didn’t end up keeping it. 5 years later it is still on the truck and looks identical to the day it was purchased. I would love one of the hard roll up tonneau covers that can stop at any point you decide but those are big money so until I win the lottery.....

So i pull into Toyota today and a nice AG taco is behind me. He pulls in Toyota and I compliment his truck.
He says "wanna buy a tonneau cover ?"
I ask if his is on Craigslist and sure enough I tell him I shared his Ad.

    Small world

I didn't mention his price and Ad took over this thread for a couple days!!
