Revamping my stereo - do I keep the old subwoofer too?

You say unnecessary, but from what I can tell, you're the only one criticizing your sound system. All I did was give you my input regarding a remedy to the dissatisfaction that you voiced. Maybe you don't believe me, it looks like you think more sub is the solution to your problems but from what I've been reading you have tried that in the past and here we are.

As I said I’m not an audiophile in the way you are (I’ve scanned your posts and can appreciate all the science behind what you’re doing, but it’s quite far outside my needs as I wouldn’t notice the difference to the same level you would). The Alpine sub I installed in 2017 was the wrong sub for my listening preferences. It simply doesn’t hit in the low end the way I would like, and have had in the past from other systems.

I will definitely look into the foam to try and boost mid-bass up front. You mention the fast ring, but you’ve posted that your data shows it doesn’t do anything. I have to believe when you tested, it was in a well set up vehicle, and not a bone stock speaker screwed into bracket into door.

I actually have some closed cell foam laying around and reading shows it would be closed cell foam on both sides of the Metra bracket and then layers between the outside of the speaker to the door panel (per your 4Runner thread). Or is the fast ring the solution between the speaker and door panel? I dislike the idea of open cell foam in the door if it holds water as I’d rather have no audio than a rusty truck.

I know not everyone cares about all the minutiae, and frankly there are a lot of people here I can't help because we're on opposite sides of the planet regarding this stuff. Yeah, I installed those on a set of Mille Pros in a deadened door and 175W to each side so it didn't do much in that situation. I have experience with Kickers mounted on Metra brackets, I've done it. They need all the help they can get. This is my recommendation to fix your mid bass. Do your doors and mount them proper is the first step. Getting the right amount of tweeter is part of the equation as well.

 

I got my alpine 5 channel (40wattsx4 + 150watts at 4ohm)
l, waiting on the 2021 tacoma add amp harness from TACPACOTune. also ordered a 10" subwoofer box from there.. need to decide between pioneer shallows, JL shallows or Skar Shallows.
Waiting on sound deadening material from Amazon to come in. How much materials is everone using for sound deading/kilmat/dynamat?
Will be installing in stages.
1. door speakers/sound deadening
2. mount rear sub.
3. work on underseat amp rack, will be learning how to make abs/pvc bends like what 5 star audio does.
let's start with 1-3 first.. any advice out there other than watching all the youtube videos?

 

@CoronaTaco i want to do an under the seat amp rack like 5 Star as well. They look perfect for what i need. I reached out to TACPACOTune to inquire about the price on their amp rack but its predilled with holes for their amps and its $80 for just the amp rack. Granted theirs is made from metal which also means more of a pain to drill new holes.

 

I went with JL for a shallow sub but I’m feeding it a little bit more power so I’m not sure how that would affect the overall performance of this particular speaker. I’m using the 8W3V3 on 300w rms. It’s rated for 250 but handles it fine. I don’t use any bass boost and am careful not to introduce any distortion and I don’t have to push the amp to it’s absolutely maximum so it doesn’t get hot. I think that’s probably good under a seat where air circulation is so limited but this is only my opinion I don’t know if it matters or not. I picked up 2 boxes of the kilmat I don’t remember the exact weight but I did all 4 doors on the inner side of the door skin,both sides of the inner door frame and the inside of the door trim panels. Still have a little over half a box. They were about 60 bucks a box I think. Definitely take the time to get in behind everything for a clean install. Don’t just slap it on over your wire looms and screw heads and everything.

 

bad news good news. I hooked up another amp kenwood x802-5 today to old used razor scooter battery. it thumps loud as hell unfortunately the 2021 tacoma with power seats make a fit for the amp. gonna try to mount under the passenger side

 

same amp the 5 star audio guys used. except on 2020+ we have power seats. arrrgggg

it will under passenger seat neither. there a huge bar there. damnit damnit. I do. not want to mount behind the rear seat

 

@CoronaTaco You could add some rear seat risers. That would give you another inch of clearance. Couple guys on here machine them and sell them for around 70$ pair for driver and passenger of just get one side

 

Let’s talk direct. trying to send you a direct message. it’s a 2021 taco and yeah. I wpuld consider that solution to jack up the front seats or add spacers.

 

I recently got the "*********" amp rack and add an amp harness, very pricey... but I like it. I did an initial amp rack install under our '20 passenger seat and the under seat rear bar does hinder a lot of rear rack access, not mentioning loss of rack real estate to. I ordered the rear risers for the front seat to hopefully add enough clearance for my 1-3/4"(h) kicker key amps.

 

Any pics of the amps on the rack. Would it fit under the driver seat?

 

Still waiting for my amp to arrive, sorry, I will not try to fit it under the driver seat. I'm adamant having it under the passenger seat.

Not yet. I had it shipped to my Mom's house and haven't been over there yet. I've got a 2016 without a power seat, so I don't have to worry about that. I haven't gotten that far, anyways.
