Dropped the cylinder head off at the machine shop this morning in Boerne. Talked to the owner and he said he normally takes off about .010” to true things up. The gasket i bought is .030” thickness and i took the old one in with me and he said it came out to about .020” so that should work perfect. He said it should be ready by wednesday so i may be taking advantage of the added sunlight in the evenings to get this thing thrown back together.

So what is the plan to keep this from happening again?

ARP head studs and 80 ft lbs of torque. other than that if it pukes another gasket after a short period of time, i'm gonna start looking at a LQ9 6.0 LS swap. I really want this 2TR to like boost and hold up to it, but i am not so sure that's gonna happen. I am about tired of fighting this thing though so something's gotta change. I will probably put a much less aggressive tune on it as well whenever i get it put back together, but i dont think that's the problem

Out of curiosity, what clutch are you running? Mine just bit the big one in the way to work today, and I just got done being run in circles with LCE and clutch masters. LCE is going to get back to me with a recommendation for my application sometime today.

I am running SPEC's stage 2+ clutch. It has been holding up great, but there are some minor vibrations throughout certain rev ranges while accelerating and decelerating. I got used to it though and can drive it without having it vibrate. I had a similar issue with LCE's dual comp clutch and after they gave me the runaround (and then sent me to the manufacturer- Clutchmasters) who also gave me the run around, i finally decided to bite the bullet and put a better clutch in it. I would personally avoid LCE's clutches as they're made by clutchmasters and they have absolutely terrible customer service and support.

I haven't had any issues with LCE's support so far, but clutch masters was a bit of a pain. LCE told me to call clutchmasters and ask about a twin disc setup to keep street driving and still be able to handle aggressive driving, some drag racing, boosted launches and such. Spoke with clutchmasters and they said "no way, that's a drag clutch only, you want the 6 puck ceramic clutch." They also said they could do a twin disc, but it would be a custom order and about 2700.

Yeah i know i'm a bit biased, but i wouldnt touch a clutchmasters disc with a 10 ft pole after what they put me through. I had to drop my trans 5 times to narrow it down to a loose hub on the clutch disc and even after that, they refused to warranty the disc

Dang, 2700 is not cheap! That would be cool to see a twin disc setup for the R155 though. Keep me posted on what you decide to do man

Ouch, yeah I'm hoping to not remove the trans that many times. I looked at the stage 2+ and up, but the highest hp/torque rating I could find was URD claiming 180% torque hold, meaning about 500 ft lbs if I did my math correctly. I expected a beefy clutch to be expensive so I'm not really scared off by the 2700 price tag.

Edit: that URD clutch also had a note saying drag use only, not a street clutch.

Ahhh yeah i keep forgetting you're getting ready to boost yours to the moon lol. Yeah if you're looking to daily it i would avoid the puck style clutches. A twin disc setup might be a good compromise with what you plan to do with your truck

Seems to be a far too common theme with their products unfortunately. I vowed never to buy another clutchmasters product after their bs. I'm sure you feel the same way after that dang TOB failed on you

Yup, they're getting a reputation now. I'm part of a manual tacoma group on facebook and lot of the third gens guys are installing the hydrobearings. Don't think they've had any (many) failures yet but I've got a feeling a flood is coming. People are becoming aware of the problems that a few of us on tacomaworld have had to deal with. That company has made a lot of money off of tacomas with no backing up of their products whatsoever.

It may be a your mileage may vary type of thing. Send it and see what happens, then report back if it sucks?

Good news is, if it sucks I don’t live far from clutch masters. Maybe if someone is inperson they will take care of issues more seriously. Fingers crossed theres no issues though.

I can say having dealt with Brian and Tony at LCE with all my questions and advice for my build so far, they're great to work with. They did say that if I put a clutch rated for 400 into my truck thats planned to make 500, there wouldn't be any possible warranty coverage.
