Its up to you and your check book. I had a 16,19 and now a 21 The 19 was a SR stickered @ 32123, got 29899, it is on the lot for 32700. The 21 is a SR5 stickered out at 37328-1000 rebate, hadn't intended to trade but while waiting for my 20000, mile service was approached about a trade I just tossed a number out not thinking they would do it the came back with a 300 over offer .

I had my days of tuner cars, WRX STI’s, SRT-4 etc etc.... i get plenty of enjoyment out of the manual Tacoma - i just prefer to control the transmission the way i want, not some gear hunting garbage factory tune.

I am swapping my 17 Taco for a 2021 Tundra SR5. Too many little issues but in the end she has been good to me. As a family we ALL have Toyota's. Taco's( 2017-2019), Rav4 (2018) and a Highlander (2019). Would have it any other way! LOL

I've owned both Manual and Auto taco's. Both are great trucks. The manual is so much better. You can control the engine and keep it in the power band. Automatic robs the motor of power and it does not have much to spare. Also seems to hunt for gear and when fully loaded is a dog. Much better to have the manual off road if you know how to drive. My two cents...

I traded in my 2018 Off-road auto for a 2019 Off road manual a few months ago. It hurt financially but it was worth every penny. I couldn’t stand the automatic but I love the manual!

I get you. Makes sense. For me and what I do, the manual would be a pita. I much prefer manual transmissions in cars. But not in my off road rigs. To each his own.

for what it’s worth I’m not sure how the guy has driven the WRX STI and SRT-4 and claims the Miata is not fun.

That being said, a manual Tacoma can probably be enjoyable, maybe somewhat exhilarating and potentially exhausting to drive. So I could see it from both sides, but this guy just sounds like a gate keeping manual owner

Definitely worth it, no use being miserable driving something that you don't enjoy.

    this and that...
manual, short shifter with weighted knob, and ov tune. its really too easy. i do agree, that manual trans would be better suited in a sports vehicle...or any vehicle for that matter. i remember few months back i had a 2019 sequoia as a daily, how i wished that mastadon was paired to a 6spd manual trans. that woulda made the land yacht much more...enjoyable lol.

Big advantage for the manual is the 4.30 gears. My 17 automatic was constantly shifting could never hold 6th gear. 19 manual same driving has no problem with a little better gas mileage because it doesn’t have to constantly shift.

Can do all of that with an automatic if you know how to drive. Just because it CAN shift gears automatically doesn't mean the driver can't override things to get the transmission in the correct gear for the application.

When you combine a manual transmission with 1st and reverse geared as high as the Tacoma with an engine that needs 4600 rpm to reach torque you have a problem on your hands. I can enjoy a manual, but in a truck you need torque down closer to 2000 rpm and a much lower 1st and reverse gearing.

If you want to use the truck as a truck buy an automatic. If you want a toy the manual is OK as long as you never tow or haul anything. There is a reason they don't even offer manuals in 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks designed for heavy duty use.

But to the original question. IMO I'd lose too much money to trade before at least 5 years. And 10 years is better. You'd be surprised at what a 10 year old truck made by anybody sells for.

LOL I guess you have never seen the inside of a semi or the dozen or so one ton and ¾ ton diesel trucks I've owned with a manual....that's pretty funny.

I don't think I have anything to learn about driving either.

The only thing you got right was the tall reverse gear. Manual transmission and heavy use is all they had in 18 wheelers for good reason, automatics suck.

85% of 18 wheelers are now automatic transmissions or AMTs. Which is virtually the same as putting your Tacoma in S drive. A lot
truck manufacturers are calling the manual a thing of the past in terms of actual capability and efficiency

Nothing wrong with the automatic in these trucks they work fine, it’s the gearing they got wrong.

And do you know why they are going all automatics. For one they want to take as much control away from the driver, and the technology they are putting in the big trucks is a true fking nightmare putting it mildly. 2 there is a major driver shortage, so automatics make it easier to get more people to drive trucks. Driving truck this day and age truly sucks.
