Buy the time you add all the mods, $$ figure it out how long it will be before you even brake even! Just keep it stock and light on the gas...

:)Aloha! All you Tacoma Lovers. I am on my 2nd Tacoma in 10 Years. I first had the reg. cab., no adjustment on the seats, or storage, or radio, but for $12k Brand New it was alright, until I tried to Move a COCO Palm, about 20 ft. Tall. Well Then I bought my 1998 SR5V6 EXTRA CAB, 5speed LOADED WITH BEDLINER,Alarm,CD, ETC. only 26K On the Clock Under Full warranty for only $12,777. O' what a Blessing it was. What a Different truck, is was also. I added Stainless Steel Wheel Wheel Guards, White Letter BFG. Tires, Bed Cover, Hood and Window Shields, Opened the Airbox. Boy does this thing Haul A--. Now, I get anywhere From 24 to 29 MPG. That is with my Air on. This is of course a 4X2, Not A 4X4.

I also Drive Within the Speed Limit. I know ALOT Friends who buy a 4X4 just too look Good at the Stoplite, But there Truck,, is Always Super Clean, No Mud. But Boy do they Always Complain abour there MPG. Well when I show them what I get, MPG they just Flip Out, plus this is a 3.4LV6. Here in Hawaii we pay the Highest Price for GAS: $3.38 For Regular. So You see, Hey If Off Roading is Your Game, HEY GO FOR IT! But if You just want to Impress the Guys or Gals, Buy a Nice 4X2, Not to mention all the extra Maint. that you have with a 4X4.

I know that Most of the truck owners are You Dudes, But that is alot of Money too spend on a 4X4, Not to mention about the Insurance. The Extra Money You Spend on Gas You Could Be Playing the Stock Market. Just take this with a Grain of Hawaiian Salt.

God Bless You All, And have Fun.

Glad you like your truck. :)

I have a 4x4 because they handle better on the snow and ice. Granted, that isn't an issue in Hawaii.

What extra maintenance? You mean the front diff oil change?

ok forgive me if this is a dumb question and sorry if it was already covered, but does a dual exhaust give any mpg benefits? I had heard from a friend that can help add a mpg or two. Just wondering...

Lots of opinions, but a poll on here a while ago said AFE prodry-s cai. The air box on the second gens don't lend themselves to modification like the first gens do.

I rather doubt you'll get much in terms of mpg out of it, but it still should come out cheaper since you won't have to buy new air filters.

I doubt that you will get your money back in MPG improvements. Most of the dual exhausts systems are just cat back so they are mostly for looks.

Best gain in MPG is to improve your driving style.

i have droped in a k/n air filter in my prerunner 2.7.for $35.00 i felt the power right away.a stock one is $12.00 so it pays for it self.its a nobrainer!

Hi all this is my first post here. I picked up a 2010 DC V6 RWD Tacoma last week. My first fill up was only 15mpg all around but its a lot of fun to drive so its not an issue. This is my third truck and I feel 4x4 is more truck than I need and I live in the northeast. My first was a T100 RWD for six years with no problems in maneuverability. I then owned a silverado 4x4 but rarely used the four wheel drive function and so why bother with something that I can live without and will improve my MPG. Also I wont chane air filters etc since Toyota has a 2 year maintenance coverage in place for new vehicle purchases(and its free!!)..

the good thing about the k@n air filter is that it won't void your warranty.and its lasts a million mile.and you get more mpg's.

New here and to pickups (if you don't count a 1948 GMC I had 40 years ago).
I was getting along fine in a 2006 Porsche Boxster S, until the snow fell. It was like trying to steer toboggan uphill. So less than a month ago I bought a bare bones Tacoma. Regular cab SR5 4 cylinder 4WD. First time in I don't know when I had a vehicle with crank windows, bench seat, and you actually have to use a key to get into the thing.

In short, I love it. I've only driven it in the city so far, very short trips. Just got gas at 337 miles. It took 14 gallons to fill = 24 mpg (23.86 if you use all the decimal places).

I realize you can't judge from one tank since the dealer may have filled it fuller than I did, so I'll wait, but I am thrilled to get anywhere near this kind of mileage for city driving before the break in period.

OK . . . In the interest of full disclosure . . . I was telling my girlfriend about my mileage and she claims she put $10 worth in. She never does that. Ever. Usually I get the car back and it's below 'empty' and I have to push it to the gas station.

Can't believe I let her drive it, but she had a flat tire. So, you add 3 gal. and we're talking 20 mpg. More realistic, but . . . Fuaaahw . . . that woman drives me crazy.

As far as crank windows go welcome to the world of the common folk :)

My family was once really into the fancy things on cars. Used to drive Lincolns and Caddys. Things were ALWAYS going wrong. Especially after about 5 years and 60k.

Money got tight for my dad in 93' as he took a job that paid about 1000 less a month. He got a bone stock except for the auto tranny (not even a tape player) 93' carolla. Drove it to almost 300k miles and then got rid of it. The largest issue in that time, and only issue actually was a timing chain replace. That car still is around my hometown, and now has almost 400k miles on it.

We have been buying bone stock cars and trucks even since in my family. We are now at 4 brand new bone stock toyotas including that 93'. In 17 years we have had zero major vehicle issues.

There is something to be said for a toyota with crank windows and manual locks. Please TOYOTA don't ever become what the Dakota (packaging like CRAZY) did with its latest redesign. You see how well that is working out!

Ed Zachery! I like the simplicity of this truck. I plan to complement it with a very simple 'RV.' I plan to take an 1100 lb cargo trailer, stick in a cot, sink and stove; and a marine head and take off to the SW and Mexico. Keep it lightweight and go boondocking. No 'RV' parks for me.

I thought about building one of these, but decided a condo in town was a better choice.

I know I'm gonna get shit stormed for this but the best MPG gain I got was with the install of, um... An AFE cai. The first 4 days of having it on my MPG's went up by 2 miles, and that's with all the foot stomping wanting to hear the "roar". Now it's gone up 4 mpg's. I know people talk about the sucking in hot air but I have an ultraguage installed ( installed before cai install ) and the guage I keep an eye on the most is the intake temp. The temp hasn't gone any higher than it did with the stock intake system. The only time it goes higher is at a stop light or in stop and go traffic, once I get going on the highway the temp drops very quickly back to the normal temp.

Second tankfull was 16mpg and I miss my bench seats on previous trucks. No room for the dog upfront now.

I am new here so I apologize for any stupid requests. I just bought a new Tacoma and wonder how I might attach either a tool box or canoppy to the bed. The composite bed and track system is so different to my older Nissan.
