5lugfury's v8 swap and sas

Finally got some more done. Got a new Holley fuel pressure regulator and made a new harness for the gear selector switch.





Also got the coolers finalized and mounted





Going to have to modify the new grill whenever I get one and yes paint will come shortly after the swap lol





Now onto the next big thing I need to finalize... the transmission. Since I got a new transmission from an imported 1jz vvti I accidently got a triprotic version of the a340e. This version of the transmission has 7 solenoids instead of 5. I need to figure out which solenoids do what and what the extra 2 solenoids do. It'll probably be better since I plan to drive my a340 as a triprotic anyways but I need to do some research first.



looking at the 5 solenoid valve bodies I'm assuming 6 and 7 are the extra ones.

 

Would you mind posting a pic of the main harness connection on the tiptronic A340?

Now onto what I've done.. I added a autometer temp sensor inside using the original temp wiring.


I set up a test rig using the switch method (One per shift solenoid). I was able to get ahold of someone at ATF speed and they said the extra two solenoids are for extra engine braking so for now I am going to ignore them.



Using the switches powering the solenoids I have every gear and the transmission engages a lot better; its crazy how smooth is it. Now that I know that my wiring will work, the next phase is to wire in the oem shifter, so whatever gear you select the trans will stay in that gear using the solenoids. Once I have the original shifter wired, then the fun sequential shifter will come in.

 

So I got the trans wired to the 1uz ecu and after I got all the error codes gone, I drove the truck. I could tell it was shifting but it never seemed to get into first gear, when I put the shifter to low there is a substantial difference. I realized the ring on the shaft for the speed sensor is different.

I have the shaft on the far right but I need the ring on from the other two. Luckily the rings come off so I just need to swap them which I will do this week.




This weekend I decided to take a break from transmissions and wiring to do my winch plate and front hitch. I will most likely trim the teeth hanging off (Or I could be an auger lol) but I'm waiting to see how I do my skid plate first.

 

Our GX470 has a ‘Second Start’ button where it won’t go into first gear at all. For low traction events or where you want more wheel speed than ground speed and one less shift.

 

I truly feel like the speed sensor is making the ecu think its going way faster than it is. For now I've gone back to completely manual mode until I get my dumb ecu wiring fixed. I noticed that some of the wires near the plug aren't always connected so Im working on replacing the first 6" of each wire lol.

Super slow progress but im almost done with the harness refresh. I did however start to get ac parts. For the compressor side there is an adapter plate that converts the denso compressor to standard ac fittings.


On the other side by the firewall I cut the stock Toyota ac hardline and braised in a hose crimp fitting. This allows a new hose to be ran but retains the stock disconnect at the firewall.

For the condenser and dryer I'm using Universal parts. I do think the condenser is slightly bigger so hopefully it'll give me a little more efficiency.

The biggest thing right now is the engine harness and then I can square always the auto and really start putting miles on.

 

Are you still 5 lug 2wd or are you doing tons and 4x4 or something?

 

I'll be 2wd locked for a couple of years and eventually I'll add a front axle and swap in a jeep Cherokee transmission which is the same trans but comes with a Dana 300 so I can use a terralow gear set. The engine swap has been quite a bit of work so I want to enjoy it for a while before I tear back into it.

 

Don't ever ever ever use these solder crimps lol. They create a cold solder joint that'll fail. I still have a few of these to swap out in the cab but I think I've got all the ones in the engine bay.



Speaking of wires in the cab I finished replacing all the pins at the ecu along with new tefzel wire going 6" into the old wires. I also got it mostly color coordinated now so wire tracing should be easier.



With this I can now shake the ecu and don't have then engine cut out or sensors disappear and reappear lol.

The next thing is for the transmission speed sensor ring to get swapped out and then I can start really putting some miles on it and get some videos. Then I need to finish the ac because summer is coming quick lol

It's definitely been a learning experience, especially once you start following certain wiring standards like don't wire things with speaker or trailer wire lol. I'm very happy I decided against using the glued heat shrink for the main harness covering, as once it's sealed that's it and I've already had to go back in a few times.

It looks like the sensor ring swap will work, just need to make a spacer for the sensor.

 

Well using the stock auto is going to take more work. Even after adding the proper sensor ring the ecu still hasn't changed. For now I will be driving it manualized with the 12v signals coming from the gear selector through some diode to engage the solenoids. For the 3-4 shifting I found the wiring at the shifter that outputs 5v depending on which is selected, this triggers a relay for the 12v signal for 3rd and off for 4th. Once it's been finalized I'll post up a diagram making it easier to understand.

So the truck now drives and shifts very smooth. I still have plenty to do such as adjust my coil overs to compensate for hella taco lean as well a one oil seepage and ac. Oh yeah paint is a coming as well.



Of course I took a short video, short shifted and had to turn but he's a quick glimpse of it working. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to drive it more and start getting some more miles into it. Besides getting gas it hasn't left the neighborhood yet.

So its hot in South Florida but it won't be in the truck now lol



Wiring came out kinda lame. I wanted to tap into the Tacoma ac unit for a 12v signal to use as a signal to the v8 ecu to turn on the compressor. Turns out it's alot more complicated so I have a compressor "ac" switch now lol. I did find the idle up wire and permanently grounded it because the power steering pump would stall the engine in rev sometimes lol.

Gotta fix an exhaust leak then I'll probably make some more videos.

Hell yeah! Progress!

 

So I've been working on finding what color to paint the truck. I knew I was going to use monstalier and their midnight blue but I also wanted a little flake in it as well.



First try was an indigo flake and a "ghost" purple flake

Top is "ghost" flake Middle is original base color and bottom is indigo


I liked the indigo but the purple up close was a bit much. So I ordered one more flake midnight blue and tried again. Also this time I just brushed it and didn't use the suggested roller. I'm not try to get texture just figure out color.

The top is just mid night flake, the middle is base color and the bottom is a 50/50 of midnight and indigo flake.



So the camera doesn't do it justice but the 50/50 mix is the color I'm going to use.





I might have to wait since we hit the rainy season is south Florida lol
