2005 Tacoma differential/transfer case oil

IMO thinking = caring about your expensive Tacoma and that is a good thing.

 

Every 30k is overkill on the rear diff. We ran out service trucks 7 days a week & usually swapped them out at 250,000 mi. We never drop the fluid out of the rear end. In the past 30 yrs I do not remember one rear diff failure. I changed mine at 60k and have no plans to do it again.

 

for my prerunner, i change my diff gear oil to synthetic gear oil with LSD addittive, after ward run for few miles, develop chattering during backups and cornering... i flush it again and change it to conventional mineral gear oil with LSD additve. chattering and shimming disappear

 

Lol 250k on the original oil.... Yeah no thanks.

Rear every 30k is cheap insurance vs a ring/pinion and bearings. Many a failure of that nature with those running original oil past the 100k mark on toyota axles.

 

Same. I changed mine at 65km and all three were pretty black. I changed again at 130km and they were still in good shape. After break in I would put in the high end stuff and forget about it.

Unless you launch boats or crosss water frequently, in which case I would do 30k mile changes with the cheapest stuff I could find.

 

i just bought a used 2008 Prerunner with 110,000 on the odometer. yeah the oil is totally black. change it with 3 quartz of synthetic

75W-90 gear oil with one bottle of LSD additives. Note: a sticker on the differential box is "LSD oil only". with this in mind, a synthetic is better.. so i did, after that was done.. run it a few miles, it develops a shimming and chattering as i back up and even in cornering... read the manual again, nothing it mentions about synthetic gear oil. results, i change it with Sta Lube conventional gear oil and a bottle of Tranx Posi-Trac LS gear oil additive.. resullts , shimming and chattering dis appear.. Synthetic gear oil doesn't work on limited Slip Differential... it works ... learn a lesson...

 

They also make the conventional with the lsd.

 

thanks P16.... i'm feel better now, ohh the dealership also check my VIN and they come up with few recall, replace the lift spring Assembly (4spring in a pack) at no cost to me...

 

Yeah from what I’ve read online and what oreillys tells me, it’s better to use conventional in a Ls diff

 

yes, i learn it really quick, when i used synthetic gear oil & i even added a LS additive. i get chattering on my backups and cornering... i change it right away with conventional mineral gear oil with LS Additive.

75W-90 gear oil witth LSD Additive. gush i was terrified when i backups and in cornering it chatters so bad that it feels like my differential is falling apart.. i changed it to conventional mineral gear oil with additive. all my worry went away... it might not be the same to you guys but it really works on my new Taco i just bought which it has 100,000 miles with no gear oil change it yet..

 

That’s cool. I used castrol axle limited slip 80w-90 gear oil gl5 for my rear diff. No chattering so far.

 

This was kind of my thought until I remembered that I’ve been backing a boat trailer into the lake, and I get it way in there.

I’ve only got 50,000 on the gear oil (Assuming the previous owner never changed it) but I’m going to drop the oil and look for milky goo.

 

It is easy enough to do.
You might as well, change it.
You don’t need fancy or expensive oil
I run 80w-90 in my rear diff. Standard conventional oil.
