4th Gen?

I think trucks sell so well because of being such multipurposed vehicles, they are just as at home hauling a bunch of crap or riding the trails as using it to run errands.

Not accurate at all either. And what was this theory of yours based on? 4Runner is 18 months away, Tacoma is a bit later than that, but not by much. It is 30 months. I don't where anyone is getting 2026 from, as it's not credible, since nothing I have been able to observe from Toyota and key personnel supports it.

 

Spit-balling just like you. Me and Mike Sweers went for some beers a few days back. He said the Tacoma is a “decade truck”. Once a decade you get a new one. The only thing he would guarantee is a smaller engine and even less low-end torque next time out, but it’s gonna be sexy as hell.

 

And, the lower on road handling limits make it a fun drive there also.

If they put discs on the back of the 4th gen Taco, I’m out. I need drums for off-road.

 

If they put in a truck motor, I'm selling my 3rd Gen and buying a Kia.

 

I've never had rear drums offroad and I don't do anything really wild, so I don't really know much about their benefits. What makes them good for offroad? Too easy for junk to get between pads on discs and/or something else?

 

Based on the information I've seen from @Carmaker1 , I don't think he's doing a lot of spitballing. 2024 fits the timeline I guessed, too. Especially considering the new Colorado is likely slated for 2023 and it came out a year before the 3rd gen Tacoma.

 

I realize you're being facetious, but you realize literally every manufacturer uses their engines across multiple platforms, right? The Pentastar V6 is in everything from a Jeep Wrangler to the Dodge Caravan. The same engine that powered my V6 Mustang also powered the Ford Windstar and Ford Ranger/Mazda B3000. The 5.0L in the Mustang is the same motor that's in the F150. Those EcoBoosts are also in multiple different vehicles. Toyota is no different. Nothing is a "truck motor" or "car motor." It's all about what it is paired with for the application.

The whole platform association of an engine is an utter joke. This is why I laugh everytime someone suggests a LS swap into a Taco. Friggin' car motors . . .

 

I was being a bit sarcastic, as there are endless posts about the rear drums on the Tacoma.

I do not think there’s any great benefit off-road, as other makers have discs in the back and they work just fine.

The main thing the rear drums do is make like a little easier for the manual transmission guys, as they have a full-power parking brake that works on both rear wheels. Not a tiny mini-drum brake like some rear disc systems have for the parking brake. Also not a foot-pedal parking brake, or electronic pushbutton like on many new pickups.

If you have driven standard off-road, you know how important that hand-operated parking brake is, along with the ability to precisely feather it with your hand while working the pedals with your feet and steering.

In my estimation, the drums brakes are the easy/inexpensive way for Toyota to continue to offer the manual transmission.

Makes sense about the manual transmission. 4th gen 4runner rear parking break is definitely finicky to get adjusted right so it works but isn't dragging all the time, and if you need it with a manual, then I see how it would be a pain.

 

As I said, I realized you were being facetious, however wasn't sure to which extent. I just find it comical when people refer to this as a "car engine" or the previous engine as a "truck engine."

 

Thankfully not all rear disc brakes use that goofy style drum parking brake system, my car actually uses the calipers.

 

I don't "spitball" nor is Sweers a friend, but suit yourself. I know I'm right and with time, that will become clear and maybe I'll revisit this then. And yes, I'm sure it's good looking. (I'm not going to post up internal TMS and TMC visuals on a forum, because it would be very unwise.) #2024

Not my issue going forward. I know what I already know, told you when it is coming, and you do what you want to do. One thing I don't do, is troll of course (never my intention). I know it will all start surfacing during 2022 in test rounds and y'all will look rather funny.
