    • Check out the bottom of the thread. It has eye bolts previous talked about in the tread along with other products. I bought the eye bolts and they work perfectly

I never actually paid attention to that before. I thought it was just an Amazon feed based on my cookies. That's pretty slick, thanks for pointing it out!

I wish I came to this thread before I wired up my cap, would have saved me a lot of time...seems like bad batch of wiring.

I just received it last week and spent way too long troubleshooting until I found that the polarity was swapped in the two pin connector like the rest of you. I swapped the wires and got the third brake light to work but now the lower brightness of the tail light doesn't work (like when the headlights are on or after you lock the truck). I verified that the tail light works fine with the harnesses removed but I'm at a loss for what the &^%# is going on now.

I've tried checking the resistance in the harness (thinking there was too much voltage drop) but it seems fine with the multimeter. Could it be the third brake light..something else? Has anyone else run across this?

I've reached out to @OffroadAlliance.com (where I purchased) and hopefully will figure something out.

    edit: added pictures for clarity

The harness they provided you is 2 wires. The harness it taps into from the factory is 3.

When you installed the new Y harness you essentially bypassed that lower bulb.

I provided pictures of this when I found the issue on my harness as well.

RSi supplying harnesses at all is relatively new and they are not sending correct harness for properly tapping into the Tacoma.

Thanks for the quick response. I just came to the same conclusion. I'll go hunt down your post to see what you did but I suspect that I will need a new harness with the third pin in the triangle connector. These guys (RSI) seem pretty good at fabrication but the wiring is ridiculous - how can they keep selling a product with this sort of known issue??

edit: @OffroadAlliance.com got back to me very quickly and processed the issue with RSI. According to RSI the third wire in the harness is only required for trucks with LED tail lights. Still two separate issues with one wiring harness....

I’ll add another issue to the list. The latches are prone to freezing closed in northern climates which I think was already reported. Also I discovered after the first salt laden drive a few days later I could hardly work the locks on the back latches due to internal corrosion. I sprayed some liquid wrench lubricating oil into each lock and this cleared them up. Definitely something that needs to be addressed if they plan on selling these in the northern US and Canada.

I haven’t resolved it yet, I purchased the cap through a local company because they offered free install.

I reached out to them about the wiring, they responded that they had reached out to RSi and were waiting for them to reply. They called me late last week and asked me to swing back by so they can resolve it.

Easy solution is to just tap that 3rd wire, which is what I imagine they will do for mine. If I did the install myself I would have just done this so it was complete without waiting on a replacement.

As for how they keep selling these with a known issue, in their defense they providing the harness is relatively new. Basically these caps were all out of stock most of Q4 2020, when they started shipping again they included this harness. I assume they received a bulk of them from whatever supply chain they are using and didn’t realize they had bad harnesses until they all went out.

I’m pretty confident this is a short term problem and is as early adopters are experiencing the issues.

It doesn’t change how I view the product. Them going from no harness to providing a harness at all shows me they are trying to add more value to their products. If we had to receive a funky batch before they ironed it out for future buyers it doesn’t bother me much.

how easy/difficult is it for you to close your tent on the cap? i always find myself standing on the side of the bed to tuck in the fabric on my tepui (looks like a similar model). do you stand on the wheel and can tuck everything in?

going from gfc to rsi cap and a different tent? i kinda thought a gfc would be nicer to have than a cap and tent since you can stand inside it.

Yeah, I have the same thing going on. Let me know what your fix turns into. I struck out already with some touchup paint for a chipped side panel so I'm wondering if RSI is going to do anything for you.
Off-road alliance was very responsive by the way. They sent in a warranty claim but RSI told me they were out of paint and to go to a local shop to buy some.

It’s easy when you have sliders and rear bumper for steps hahaha. It’s actually easier for me now even tho the setup is overall much taller than what I had before. Having a solid roof and a track to hold on to goes a long way.

Like I tell people at work asking for time off, “do what you can afford” hahahaha The GFC has its merits for sure. I’m stoked to have dry cargo for once in my winter camp life LOL

At this point I value the larger tent space of something like an iKamper over standing in the GFC. But I'm gonna wait till GFC releases their topper before deciding between that and a smart cap.

I've never run a rooftop/captop rack before. Are the installed rails proprietary sizes or will other brands fit? Mainly interested in a bike rack on the cap but I wouldn't mind the ability to put luggage also. I don't really know what to look at to make sure it fits

The integrated channels on the RSI caps are not proprietary but they do take a slightly different size hardware than most of your standard Thule, Yakima, etc mounts come with. A quick trip to the hardware store and most people have been able to source the correct size hardware to attach the vast majority of the accessories out there.

The load bars have been one of if not the most popular accessory. RSI just cannot get those here fast enough to meet the demand. There are some arriving end of the month and another batch coming in April. So best estimate is you're 2-6 weeks out.
