So in the last 30k miles it doesn't appear to have gotten new plugs, and who knows how long before that. So that solidifies that as a spring project for me. :burp:

From what I remember in Fairbanks -20F was no issue for the 3.4 or 4.0s. I'm guessing it's just time for new plugs. The gap is probably way off by now.

What does your winterization look like other than the block heater?

I haven't done anything special, but it's started fine so long as I had the block heater plugged in. Even started it at -50 once with only a few extra cranks of hesitation.

I was able to start my 2.7 at -30 with only an extra crank or two, never failed to start for me.

Yeah, that's me with the 3.slow. This 4.0 is new to me, so I'm learning that it needs to be babied a bit. Hopefully the plugs are worn to crap though. Most folks on this forum are from warmer regions, so it's hard to get a gauge on the 4.0 in extreme temps.

Well being plugged in for 3 hours it fired up like no one's business. I'm leaning sparkolators at this point, though who knows.

Welp, that didn't take long. The clutch is on its way out. Trying to get on the highway I grabbed 3rd, pushed on the go juice pedal, and the rpms came up and up and up while the speedometer barely moved. Backed off the happy pedal a bit and it finally grabbed and the rpms came back down.

They're stupid simple on the 4.0. You gotta remove the intake metal bracket on the drivers side, but that's it. That was the first thing I did to my 2009 when I bought it. The 10mm bolt holding the coil pack to the valve cover can be a struggle since it's steel on aluminum. I had to beat a socket on there. I picked up Denso's from the dealer. Those or NGK's are you're best bet, in copper of course.

That sucks! Well atleast you can go ahead with an upgraded clutch since you're planning on adding power down the road.

:eek::eek: I really hope that was a joke... iridium or platinum at least!

Yeah I was hoping to get longer out of this clutch and swap for an updated one when the built engine went in.

No, no joke. The 4.0 takes standard copper plugs and seems happiest on them.

Yeah, tons of people on here say Iridium give them worse mpg than copper on the 4.0. I haven't heard anything on the platinum ones.

@BananaMan It's got 175k miles, so hopefully has had at least one plug change...

That's nuts, I barely accept copper plugs in my lawnmower!

Does it have ngk on one bank and denso on the other? That was the giveaway on the 3.4 they were original, not sure if they did it on the 4.0.

I'll be sure to post about it once I pull them. It won't be for a month probably, supposed to warm up here pretty soon and it's a good springtime activity.
