Hidden strobes 3rd gen

But I can make a more in depth thread here.

So, first things first. My life was saved by someone who stopped to check on me, less than a minute after the ambulance picked me up I blacked out, I woke up in the hospital surrounded by people shuffling around trying to figure out whats happening, I couldnt breath and my airways were blocked. They stuck a tube down in my mouth and I passed out again. If the people who stopped for me didnt, I would of died right there in the middle of the highway.


Ive always stopped for people in need, but now its more of a duty for me to help others in need.

When stopped my biggest fear is getting hit by someone not paying attention, Ive already had the car I was helping with hit by a drunk driver, and I want to limit the chance of getting hit so I set out to put strobes in my truck.

I didnt like the normal light bars in the front and rear windows, and I didnt like the idea of drilling holes in my headlights and tail lights to install hide-a-way strobes.

So I went on strobes n more to see what options there were. I found this, its a 6 channel strobe controller. It has 24 flash modes, steady burn, and the normal on/off. It doesnt have a switch box or anything, so I can control it with OEM style switches to make it seemless.




Once I got my controller, I needed to figure out where I am going to put strobes, then it dawned on me. The turn signals! I can hook the controller to the turn signals. I just need to figure out how to stop voltage from backfeeding from the controller into the turn signal circuit. This is where puppypunter came in. He designed some harnesses for me that are plug and play, and include diodes to prevent backfeeding. My harnesses should be to my house either saturday or monday. But here is me testing the strobe controller on one of my turn signals.

This system would be perfect for any of you construction guys, plow, fire and rescue, and police that use your personal truck sometimes. Its 100% reversible, 100% hidden, and retains use of all lights for their normal functions.

You could have a 2/4 circuit strobe controller and tap the front & rear and/or left & right from inside the cab.

 

Yeah, at some point I may upgrade my controller to something with a few more options. Right now its more of a proof of concept.

 

Ah, I see what your saying now. Maybe for the next version I will work with puppypunter on something that just plugs into the cab like that.

 

Strobe feed can be 2 wires for front & rear or left & right.

 

Front all done, Thinking of backing the truck part way into the garage after work to finish putting in the rear harnesses and get my lengths for extensions all measured out so I can start building those. Im waiting on some split loom to show up, so Ill just make the rear extensions but not install them.

 

So the cab harness tap is a no-go for ya?

 

Have not tried yet. I got these harnesses from puppypunter today. Im going to play around with the c10 plug another day, but I will stick with the puppypunter harnesses I got since I can chose any of the tail lights to be a strobe.

We might explore the c10 for a harness for people who dont want to run wires to all 4 corners.

 

Started building my extension harness yesterday that goes from the controller to the rear lights. Got the wires all measured and cut, I crimped on the plugs, then went to put the plug on the other side only to find out I crimped both ends of the same wire.... I made a loop

So, took that apart and tried again. Now I have the extension harness for the strobes all done, thursday my split loom should be in and tonight I will be picking up some more power wire for the reverse lights. I also had to order some more waterproof plugs to finish the mirror signals.

So, shooting for saturday or sunday for a video showing both front and rear, then mirrors when meso finishes the new v5 mirrors.

 

what am i looking at here? what are the two inputs going into? are there diodes in there? can that section being tapped into get really pulled from the truck to be worked on on a bench?

 

So the c10 plug is on the back of the cluster, its pretty much the turn signal relay. You can intercept the turn signal wires there to insert your strobe signal. You cant remove that section of wire to work on outside the truck, but you can get both male and female c10 plugs from the dealership to make the harness.

 

Like Erik wrote, it's an added harness to intercept the circuits. Here another "view" with 5 pin relays.

Towing turn & stop are not "intercepted" but can be...

Reviving an old-ass thread, but do you happen to have the correct part numbers?

 

I think its 90980-12767 and 90980-12766 but im not 100% on that.

I might actually attempt this... seems like it's somewhat low-effort and low risk as long you build the harness and add diodes so that the flasher doesn't backfeed into the instrument cluster.
