Those with Manual Transmission...why?

Love being able to skip gears. Wind her out through 4th skip 5th and straight to 6th or wind her out through 3rd, skip 4th and straight to 5th.
Try doing that in an auto!

I have to go all the way into Grants Pass To see one of those, thankfully! 4 lights to get to work, pretty nice. It's a toss up coast up in neutral or downshift? Nice to have the option!

 

Or you can take you for off the gas and use it to apply the breaks. Diversity.

 

Yes, using the brakes is almost always part of the stopping process. You just have more choice of how you want use said brakes when driving a standard/manual transmission.

Nope. There is such a thing as engine braking when driving a manual transmission vehicle.

 

Or coast to that stoplight in 4th and take advantage of DFCO. I’ve been doing that a lot lately and my gas mileage has been great in town.

 

I hauled 1000 pounds of 10 feet long sheets of steel last week and was able to manage 20 MPG on the trip home, was taking advantage of the DFCO.

My buddy has the same truck but with AT, same rims and tires. I seem to get better mpgs even though AT is rated for better mpgs. Much easier to take advantage of the DFCO with the manual. I coast to red lights in gear till I hit about 1k rpms, then I throw it in neutral. I see a lot of people revmatch down shift when coming to a red light, I never understood that. I mean, if you are going downhill sure, but on flat roads in city driving? Doesn’t make sense to me.

 

Mine’s a 2nd Gen 4.0 automatic. I recently drove a friend’s 2.7 manual. It was more power than I expected but that clutch caught soooo high. Is that normal? Took some getting used to. All my friend could tell me is that it was always like that.

 

I revmatch down. Engine breaking is my only reason. That, and in the Supra it sounds badass.

I don’t know what the difference in fuel economy looks like between rev matching and DFCO though. I assume it’s negligible.

 

What is DFCO?

 

Deceleration fuel cutoff. If you coast down in gear the engine is not being provided any fuel and is just pumping air. If you shift into neutral and coast to a stop the engine is using fuel.to stay running at idle.

 

I do get it if going down hill, but IMO i see no reason for just regular city driving on flat roads. When DFCO is engaged it uses no fuel at all, when you are rev matching you are using fuel when blipping the throttle, also DFCO takes few seconds to engage.

I will rev match downshift if I’m going downhill or before going uphill so I don’t lose momentum. Also, if I’m going fast and taking a sharp turn. Other than that I always coast in gear to red lights, shift to N at about 1k rpms, works great for me.

 

Many, many thanks for that detailed explanation. One of the hardest things to get used to on Tacoma World (TW) is the use of acronyms that I have no clue about. Sometimes I have to move away from the thread to Google it so that I can understand the conversation. As it turns out, from your explanation I coast too much in neutral and will be using DFCO in the future.

 

Yeah that’s fair. I’m not really trying to defend my position as the right way, just saying that’s what I do, and have done since I learned about rev matching however long ago.

I will add that sometimes it’s fun to see how little I can use the brakes, if there’s no traffic behind me. There have been a couple of times of stop and go traffic where I balance this with staying off the clutch as well - kind of like a minimal input challenge to brake/keep chugging along. Just another reason for why I drive a manual: I keep myself entertained.

 

Still nope. I was only stating application of the brakes as another option for coming to a stop at a stop light since that’s what we were doing. Running your tires flat will give you more roll resistance or you can cut a hole in your floor pan and stick out your feet like Fred Flintstone if you want still doesn’t change how the brakes work. Also these are midsized slightly underpowered pick ups having a manual is never going to make it a 911. Some people like having extra shit to do while driving others don’t no big deal.

 

I’m in this boat as well (on both the acronyms and the overuse of neutral).

 

Someone mentioned there is a delay before this activates... any idea the delay?
