Took the boys to Joshua tree for a day adventure. I like how the wind caught his ear and made it point straight out.

I recently went through something similar with my girl who I had for 15 years. It's very hard not to be selfish in these times and keep their quality of life as the focus. My wife found a quote somewhere saying that making the choice is an agreement between you and them. You agree to take on the grief so that they can be released from their pain. It truly is the most loving gift. This website has videos that talk about measuring quality of life. It really helped me see clearly during the time you are in and make peace with what I had to do. Please DM me sometime.

New guy on the right. I lost my other blue heeler about 3 months ago. We've had him about 3 weeks now and it has been a ride. He was a stray then spent 5 months in a shelter and was only neutered a few months ago. He is about 5. He's recovering from heartworm treatment and has a condition called border collie collapse. Now that he is getting settled, his personality is coming out and he is a very good boy. I always have doubts the first few weeks when getting a used dog, but they always come around and turn out awesome.

That's pretty cool. I've got to say I have never heard the term used dog before. Premastered is the word I have heard others use in a similar situation. Either way I like what you did for him by giving him a second chance.

So the old man is doing ok. Definitely an improvement in the eye swelling and redness. Probably due to the steroid, whatever it is, he’s more energetic. Not running wild, but moving around freely and without difficulty.

Vet visit today gave us basically the same news we got with the ER Vet. She believes there is something pushing on his eye, causing the swelling. Be it an infection or mass/tumor. She gave us a course of meds for him to see if it improves at all. But she didn’t seem very confident....I think it was her way of giving us hope, but telling us it’s bad either way.
So we’ll see what happens here in the next week.
Thanks for all the replies and well wishes.

My blue girl on the left is also used. She was an owner surrender in TN then quickly moved up to DE where she stayed for a month before I snatched her up. She was extremely fearful and would pee, scream and run if I even walked towards her too quickly. She was definitely abused in her past life. She had to learn how to play from my last blue heeler that we just lost. She had no idea how to interact in a playful way with people or toys. Now she is my shadow and sleeps next to me every night. 2 years later and her confidence is still growing.

Took the old man to the park. He had some pep in his step, but 3 laps was his max. He’s toast.

Unfortunately haven’t seen any significant improvements. I think the meds help him feel good, but how long can they keep him on pain meds? Antibiotic hasn’t helped. Steroid is in the waining off days.

Pup snores like a champ now!

My 15+ yo pup has been on pain meds for 16 months now along with joint supplements. If it wasn't for them, she wouldn't be able to move.

Just had a 1lb benign mass removed from my 11 yo boys inner leg and a biopsy taken of another mass on his pelvic bone. Fingers crossed on the results. That shaved leg does look good on him though.
