Love DST. Hate switching to it. Very significant the more north you are.

Switching to it is like one of the most dangerous days on the road, and I also think there is a high rate of heart attacks as well. From a public health stand point, we shouldn’t be switching back and forth. So, let’s settle on a half hour and keep it there.

I never understood that unless people are out getting boozed up and smashed that they can't stay awake after losing only one hour during the time change. I have trouble sleeping so for me losing one hour is no big deal in the least.

The problem is folks routines get changed, they struggle going to sleep at their normal time, as their body’s clock wants to stay up a bit later.
All that being said, I agree, I’m just more cranky than normal if that’s possible.

I've never heard any factual basis for these claims.

I get people being cranky over a routine change but if everyone is out having heart attacks and dying in car crashes on the night of changing the clock then there has to be some other underlying causes. We regularly lose an hour of sleep here and there to go to appointments, early call in's, insomnia, etc without those things occurring or being a public health crisis.

I still think the cause is underlying issues. There was a scientist named Ansel Keys that started with a conclusion that fat was bad for your diet. He accepted all data that pointed towards that conclusion and threw out all data that proved against it making his work junk science.
It wouldn't not be surprising for what is in that article to have been gathered by someone that is grumpy over DST.

I second the underlying issues thing. Looking at the study itself, it only focuses on fatal car crashes that took place Monday-Friday and slightly spikes at a time when fatal car crashes are starting to go up for the year. The data shows the number is eclipsed entirely only a couple weeks later and remains that way for most of the summer before dying back down for the year. Does that mean summer causes more fatal crashes? Or are there other factors at play? (Drunk driving, people in a hurry, more cars traveling, etc). The study also claims that it has no affect (not a beneficial one) during the fall transition. They admit in the study that traffic patterns, alcohol, sleep deprivation, weather, and other circumstances were not included in the study. They also stated they included data from Indiana and Arizona, which didn't observe DST for at least parts of the study. So, yes, the study can be shown to come to that conclusion; but, correlation is not necessarily causation. Especially when other factors are ignored.

The part that stood out to me, is the data shifted when DST moved. And as far as the fall, it’s way easier to deal with more sleep than less.

I can tell you this week at school has been really hard on kids, so I will take my data and agree with DST is now a good thing for people. If it was a slower transition, then ok, or we just meet in the dam middle 30 minutes.

Well, sort of. There was already a spike in the data just prior to the 2007 and later DST in the 2006 and previous DST data. There were also continued spikes near the 2006 and previous DST in the 2007 and later data. But I do see what you are saying.

What also stood out to me was the fact that they determined that going to standard time had no affect; not a beneficial one.

I guess I'm in the minority. I would rather make the adjustment to have daylight at optimal times.

Besides it's just an hour twice a year. I travel across multiple time zones many more times per year that that. Flying from Central Africa to Dallas last year sucked. This is a minor inconvenience.

Traveling and adjusting is one thing, but to have to deal with every one who is forced SUCKS.

I mean, time is a social construct anyway. You could just keep getting up at the same time yourself.

Absolutely, in fact if I do it enough, I’ll be on welfare and won’t have to follow the social constraints of being employed.

Perhaps the issue is geographical. Lower latitudes prefer DST year round.

It's most definitely geographical. But the whole purpose was to move daylight to the more usable time for the time of year.
