    Hey peeps,

Is it possible to use/sync an IPad, basically over the standard Infotainment screen in the 3rd Gen? Photo for reference... saw this on another site, but cannot find any other info.

Looks to me like this person has an iPad with a cellular plan. Could just be paired to Entune and mounted from behind.

I think you are better off getting a nice headunit with carplay. iPads do not do well in extreme heat or cold. It would be unusable those days of the year when the weather is at either peak. Also, with a headunit, you would have to worry much less about someone breaking into your car to thieve it over an iPad. Lastly, headunits imo provide some good vehicle information and features like the backup camera. I wouldn't replace it permanently.

If you are just looking for an easy solution to mount (hopefully a mini and not the ungodly sized, larger iPad Pro) then I'd look into something like the RAM mount system.

I switch between an iPhone and an iPad pro 12.9 using a case I modified and some magnets in my 2019. It auto syncs and I can control everything from either one. Only issue I've had is trying to back up. Haven't worked out a way to get the camera to display on the ipad, so its a forward only thing, but the magnets make it easy enough.

The stock HU sucks? I WAY prefer Google Maps to the Toyota Nav, there's no Pandora anymore, etc.

I'm sure there's WAY better third party software out there now. Granted, mine's a 2016, but I run both my nav and my music off of my phone, rather than the HU.

    Check build thread!
The battery in the iPad is a fire hazard being left inside of the car 24/7.

You ever leave an iPhone on your dash on a hot day? No bueno. Just get a nice aftermarket head unit that can be installed without looking like a janky duct taped appendage on the dash. All problems solved.

Why not? I didn't want to buy another iPad and entune is terrible, plus maps on a giant screen is heaven. It just sits between the 2 vents and blocks the radio. Everything else is accessible.

Nah man, it's in my pocket. It pairs via Bluetooth when I get in, so no probs.

I'd prefer having a decent HU, but have no clue what to get. For me anyway, it would need to be able to run Google Maps, Pandora, and Gaia at least.

No, I think you missed my point... Strap an iPad to the dash and you'll get the same result I was hinting at on a hot day. When it overheats, it won't work at all. The thermal sensors will shut you down until it cools enough and you'll see the big red overheat warning on the screen. Similar thing will happen when it's too cold.

    Oh yeah, I get that!

I kinda digressed there, as I know OP is looking to do the iPad thing, which I don't recommend. Just sayin' that a device in your pocket is every bit as good, if not better, than a dash mounted iPad.

And honestly, I was kind of trolling for new HU recommendations, I should probably hit another thread for that.

Thanks everyone - guess I just saw someone else do this, looked quick and easy, but as we are all similar-minded, we think about every facet of the equation. In other words, I'll be getting an aftermarket headunit.

I think the Carplay/Android Auto addition to the 2020+ HU works pretty well.
