Dealer Recommended Service Intervals

I did a quick check through my owners manual and didn't see this?

Anyone know what and when Toyota recommends as far as services and at what mileage?

Five years ago my last Tacoma had the starter fail right next to a dealership at about 100K so I had them perform the dealer service. I know I paid a lot, but 80,000 miles later I never had an issue.

I just upgraded to an 04 that has 88K on the clock and was wondering what kind of preventative maintenance is suggested at this mileage.

I notice a slight whine from the engine so I was thinking belts?

Anyone know or have an opinion?

 

Just regular maintence...? Oil and oil filter every 3k (unless useing synthetic, like me) I dont like to go over 4,500-5k without changing, Top off all fluids, Check all belts and replace if their needed, Air filter, Fuel filter, Pcv valve, Flush radiator, Grease up all joints and drive shafts, Spark plugs, Clean throttle body, IAC (Idle Air Control Valve), Seafoam, Rear diff fluid (if 4WD front diff and t-case fluid), Flush transmission when its time to do so and replace what ever breaks and the truck should last forever!

 

Umm, what has been going on since 2004?

My three Tacomas ('01, '05, 10) all had the same recommendations:

oil change every 5,000, mid level service at 15,000 miles, and full blown service at 30,000 miles. The First Gen. timing belt needs to be changed at 90,000 miles, too.

 

Oh and good jop for useing your owners manual! Most people seem to forget its there!! lol.

 

I dont think he meant theres a difference with the 2004, I think he just didnt know what is suppose to be done in general.. Atleast thats what I thought? But OP look at the stickys and use the search function and most of the time you will find your answer! And yes change the timming belt around 90k, some people just like to see how long they can go untill it breaks lol. Its a non-interference engine, so pistons wont hit valves, you will just be stranded untill you get a new belt.

 

dont most people replace water pump and thermostat along with the belt at 90k?

 

Here's my mental checklist:

Every 7.5k - Synthetic Oil Change
Every 7.5k - Grease all zerks
Every 7.5k - Rotate tires
Every 20k - Fuel Filter and PCV valve
Every 90k - Replace timing belts, radiator hoses, thermostat, water pump, acc. belts
Every 100k - All gear lubes changed
Every 100k - Spark plugs and wires
Every 150k - New rear shoes

You can enter your year and model, and the mileage/time interval you are looking for.

At my 90K, I did my timing belt, accessory belts, water pump, idler pulleys, plugs, all fluids, and I'm sure some more stuff too.

 

Besides the regular scheduled maintenance stuff, you might also want to get the truck on a lift you can inspect other critical component. Some things to watch out/check for on the Tacoma are:


1. Frame Rust
2. Leaking rear axle, oil pan, or Transmission seal
3. CV/Ball Joints/Steering Rack assembly

 

Don't forget periodic re-torquing of your valve covers.

I do most general maintenance myself, but (horror stories aside) there is a peace of mind that comes with having the dealer perform some of the trickier tasks.

I'm going to look into the belts, water pump, thermostat, differential oils, trans fluid and coolant, plus all filters.

Any guesses as to what that would cost?

 

For my timing, air/oil filters, accessory, plugs, fluids, idlers (basically the "parts" I used for the 90K ) it was about $350-$400 I believe. I went all OEM Toyota though. I could have saved some money if I used an aftermarket idler, and aftermarket accessory belts. Also I used synthetic fluids all throughout.

I also meant to add plugs and wires.


I see "TRD" air filters? Are these worth the premium dollars? Should I get a K&N or just an Autozone style filter and change regularly?

I use OEM air filter.
Also forgot, I replaced my upper/lower radiator hoses as well.

 

+1. I did my timing belt job (replacing all of the other stuff along with it) and I think I paid around the same price.

 

In the past, I've used K&N, Amsoil, Wix, etc, etc. I've ended up going back to a factory Toyota filter. Air filters, in my humble opinion, are a wad of fluff. I've also been very suspect of the "oil spray" filters and their safeness with MAF sensors.

 

I want to note that I also change my air filter every 15k - 20k miles.

Additionally, I want to ammend my "100k - All gear lubes changed" to actually about every 60k.
