Higher Mileage Upgrades and Replacement

I have a 2011 4x4 taco 2.7l manual. 150,000(new clutch at 145,000).

I have had the truck since it had 50 miles on it(had to get a new window at 85 miles haha). All the fluids in the trucks life since 30-40k has been amsoil.

It is getting to the point where I am looking at new shocks, brakes(still on oem ones surprisingly), and any other recommendations for gearing this truck ready for the long haul.

Just curious of recommendations from the high mileage tacos who may have words of wisdom. I had considered looking to see if trd parts would bolt up to a base model and replace with trd but wasn't sure if it could be done or if there are better alternatives.

Any words of wisdom to keep this truck on the road for years to come would be appreciated.

There's not really any TRD performance mods worth getting that I know of for the 4cyl.

The only TRD upgrade that is worth it is the supercharger for the 4.0 6cyl.

150k is just barely broken in.

I have 240k on mine and just done typical maintenance.

Now upgrades and mods is a really broad topic, what are you looking to achieve with such?

If you have a six lug look into Bilstein 5100's for a decent budget upgrade, and for brakes if you want better stopping power it's hard to beat rhe TRD Pro 4Runner brake upgrade but that requires 17" wheels.

Not aure if that was a typo of getting but if you really ment 'gearing' ARB air lockers and 4.56 for 33" tires 4.88 for 34" tires ans 5.29 gears for 35" tires on the manual 4cyl is about right.

So long as you have a 6 lug then any part from and other 2nd gen will bolt directly on (with some exceptions like you can't put a 6' bed directly on a double cab that only had a 5' bed.)

The trim level is just the amenities level like the "upgraded" stereo, fog lights etc, but most trucks are prewired for stuff like that even if they never cam with it.

Honestly for "upgrades" aftermarket (with research and reputable brands) is better than anything branded TRD.

Heck even the TRD Supercharger is just a rebranded Magnuson MP90 unit for $1500 more than their unbranded one.

 

150k for these trucks is nothing. Keep up with the regular fluid changes and you'll be golden. And as @Key-Rei said, not a lot of trd options for the 4cyl. Aside from wheels, brake parts and flashy trim bits. URD makes a supercharger kit for the 4cyl fwiw. Not cheap tho.

2012 with 165,000. 2.7 4x4 manual too, Nothing major yet but I did have the fuel injector clean out done at my work just as a TLC. Def thinking about replacing shocks and leaf springs to the ARB kit. Kinda waiting for something to fail before I can justify that though

 

does that come with the gasket?
or are they circle-shaped seals that must be bought separately?

Thanks for the input. Yea not looking to do anything too crazy like supercharger. More or less just trying to catch the knowledge of the way up there mileage tacos would have had moments of "I wish I would have done that back then". Brakes and shocks are my anticipated swaps. Always thought the stock shocks are junk. Figured if I started swapping out the "should have done" swaps and mods I'll be set for the next 150k. I tend to be proactive on repairs as the truck does make occasional cross country runs.

 

Curious about your clutch and pressure plate replacement. Was that an OEM part or is there something of higher quality that is aftermarket? I have the same engine and transmission in a ‘06.

 

There’s just something about a black vehicle, of any kind that just makes me gleem with jealousy. A black Miata, damn I gotta get me one of those. A black Prius, damn I gotta get me one of those.

170k on my 2010. Just routine maintenance, only “repair” was the front wheel bearings at 150k. I also replaced the alternator at 150k as preventive maintenance. This truck has been boringly reliable!


I upgraded the stereo to one with ApplePlay, and I upgraded to third gen sport rims. Also installed the TRD cat back exhaust.

 

I went aftermarket. I cannot remember the name and will look for the receipt. I think it was a LuK I have had 4 manual vehicles and drive them at work. I've never lost a clutch that early. So far no complaints from the new one. I always go oem but this one was where I strayed. Especially reading on here with certain Gen 2's shattering the pressure plate. One of which only had 30k on it.

 

So I'm somewhere around 167K on my 6-lug '07, and actually just got the Bilstein 5100 kit / Dakar leafs and new UCAs. It's a bit stiffer, but definitely felt like the right timing and I'm enjoying the result.

I have a 2011 TRD OR 4.0, auto trans @ 97K. Maybe not as applicable to you being a 2.7, manual and higher mileage, but the original serpentine belt just started squealing at start up. Its been cold & wet in southern California recently, so not super worried. I have an offroad trip coming up, so picked up a replacement just to have on hand.
Original leaf springs were junk, swapped them out (not sure if that's applicable to you).
New shocks are probably a good idea. I have 2.5" icons on all 4 corners with probably 60k. I definitely need to have them rebuilt. Just need to arrange to have the truck out of commission for a few weeks while they're in the shop.
The plastic fender wells on the rear rattle and drive me nuts. Need to crawl under there and see if I can secure them or something.
I'm on the original brakes and started noticing an intermittent subtle vibration at low speeds. Had them checked a few months ago but no deficiencies reported.
Other than that, normal fluid changes (oil, diffs, trans, blinkers) and it runs like a top.

 

Something funny, the time between when I wrecked my old truck and bought the taco, I was in a borrowed prius. It has a button for eco, normal, power, or something like that, a 3 position switch. In power mode, the thing is really quick, not fun quick but off the line leaps out faster than you would think. It'll get you out in front of the idiot next to you playing with their phone. I would probably never own one unless I needed to make a long commute to work.

Do you tow or carry heavy loads? I feel there isn't much to the springs, fairly puny. I am looking at 5100 but was debating on the springs. I used to pull a small camper with it but not do much anymore after buying a 4runner. Now just haul lumber on occasion.

 

So I don't carry heavy loads very frequently. Just about once every 2 years I move a ton of my stuff as I move, but most of the time it's either just some lumber from Lowe's or fishing trip stuff. I do have some decent weight from the rock sliders and am looking to eventually get a C4 overland rear bumper, which will add a bit more weight.
