Nah, I'll have had it 3 years in April, so if past history is any indicator I'll probably have sold/traded it by the end of the summer :anonymous:

I've been looking semi-seriously at picking up an older diesel from a salt-free state, something pre-emissions (24v 5.9 Cummins or early Duramax; Ford's 6.0 & 6.4 from the era I'm looking at were absolute crap) then setting it up as a 'work' truck for hauling & plowing and buying a fuel-sipper for my DD. My commute for my day job is only about 15 minutes so the fuel isn't really a factor, but diesels like short trips even less than gas engines do so I'd rather be doing that trip in something disposable. Plus it'd save my 'vintage' diesel on some wear & tear from the sh*t they put on the roads around here during the winter.

Reminds me of trailer shop work. Someone always has to say "There's no way you can fix that!" I cut out the bent crap and it always came correct. They are always amazed.

Got the 3240 rear torn halfway down. The diff lock pins hitting the holes they lock in was the clunking. May be the spring that holds it away is weak. Ring gear is trashed. Gonna finish teardown Saturday and order parts. I've been on a 2 week rotation thru the weekend in the hospital with Covid ICU duty and am beat to hell right now.

    Thanks! 37...
Facebook gave me a 'memory' yesterday of a post where I'd said that turning 24 felt weird. 24!
For a diesel? Either a 24v 5.9 Cummins (98-2007) or a pre-5th injector 6.6 Duramax. I might consider a Ford from that vintage if somebody had already swapped the POS 6.4 for a Cummins, but it'd be questionable.

You would love my neighbor, he had about 10 old JD's at one time restored plus a steam powered tractor and a small steam powerplant he would fire up on summer nights and let off steam [whistle] while he had a couple cold ones.

I so badly wanted to like a common rail 03-07 Cummins truck but that is a REALLY unfortunate era of Chrysler engineering. The cabs and interiors on those were comically bad...even worse than GM's GMT 800 Fisher Price interior.

I owned a 04.5 Cummins 600 truck. The seats were horrible. One of my favorite trucks after I was completed making all the repairs:

-4 sets of injectors, last set I went 50 hp over.
-head gasket (dealership caused). decked the head .007 (limit is .013), installed ARP studs/marine gasket.
-CP3 injection pump (this is what caused the 4 sets of injectors)
-turbo. I upgraded to a 62/68/12. This was pretty sweet upgrade with the 50 hp sticks.
    - front axle u-joints
    - drive shaft's u-joints.

Some considerations on the Common Rail years:

    98.5-2005 trucks used a J1850 communications protocol
2006+ trucks use a 2 wire CAN system.
2003 heads had soft valve seats. Careful with EGT's. They can handle 1250* all day long, but not like the other years were 1350* and short bursts of 1425*.

I have a friend who bought a low mileage 6.0 Ford last year, I said I'll tell you why it has low miles.......they were scared to drive it. He's already had to replace the turbo, not sure what else.

If I end up with one of that vintage, the modern seats bolt right in with a little fiddling. I'm sure I could find a junkyard set. As to the rest, I'll probably find myself upgrading as things go bad, lol.

Went skiing today. Burning my brush pile (mountain?) again tomorrow. Sunday is a ?

I swear that the brushpile is reproducing; I had it completely burned down to nothing last summer, went in and cleaned out & graded where it was, and started a new one. That one's now 40 feet long and about 15 feet high, because it was so dry last summer (no open burn permits). I need to get it burned up before we dry out too much again this year, and I figure with the ground all muddy they can't complain, lol.

3240 rear work. Looks like the ring gear is all that's bad in it. Still checking why the diff lock pawls were clunking in the holes they lock in. It doesn't have a wear pattern like it was doing it non-stop so it may have only been noticeable with it jacked up and all the weight of the wheels made the axle sag down. IDK.

Gonna do a little more checking, order a used ring gear, seals, and the spring that holds the diff lock away from the diff and call it good.
