Yea, I went back out before it started coming down harder (god damn this rain is cold). I took out the sand frame and found a spot for it. It will just fit behind the wheel, I just need to take out the current tonneau hook plate that goes into the bracket and I didn't have time for that right then. The only thing it does is block the cubby on that side of the bed, but I wasn't using it anyway. Plus if I really needed to, I could store the bit and a driver, or replace the security bolt with an alternative wing nut, open to ideas if you are willing to give them. That would make it semi-quick detachable. I still like it, and can't wait to get it really mounted.

Semi quick detachable is a great idea but get's complicated really fast with hardware designed to be theft proof. I'm so glad if still fits. I'm assuming the right side of your bed is where the cubby. What's on your left side? In my 3rd gen I only have a cubby on one side so when I'm only running one Taco Jerry I always put it on the left.

I have a second gen access cab with a long bed, I have cubbies on both sides in the same place on the side of the bed. Personally I didn't buy this for its theft deterrent nature, I bought it for the ability to hold my jerry cans securely in bed, in case they get over-pressurized. What's the bolt size, M8x1.25?

    its a 1/4 - 20 by 3/4 modified elevator bolt.

I agree also I think the security feature is an added amenity. It surprised me how many people wanted locking security features. I’ve had mine in my bed for over a year and no has even looked twice at them. Every place is different though.

thanks! It definitely solves the issue of the plastic bed sliding gas cans around all the time!

Update time. I went outside where it's deceptively sunny (still feels like 30* according to the weather app on my phone) - which means I spent 10 minutes out there, no more. Shouldn't need more to attach this thing, I thought. I was wrong.

So I got the hook bracket for my tonneau off the bed bracket, slid the retainers into place, put the tonneau bracket back in place, and started to try to attach the jerry can holder to the included retainers. They're too shallow so they kept sliding back into the bed bracket every time I tried to start the security nut into them.

The bolts don't need to be longer, but the bases they're riveted to definitely need some additional thickness. I didn't have time to find something I could jam behind them to push them out, but it also ruins the "quick on, quick off" idea since they flop around inside the bracket.

Approximate mounting location (just enough room, covers my cubby)

Other bed-side cubby (because you asked)
    20210319_112253_HDR.jpg

And the bolts being all floppy because the backer is not thick enough to keep them in place.

And finally, I made it outside. I found a little workaround for the shallow bracket bases. I added some anti-skid bases to them, these are normally used to keep furniture in place on hardwood flooring, they're almost the perfect width, I still had to fiddle with it a little bit but I was eventually able to get the security nuts to engage the threads.

    20210319_134839_HDR.jpg

And boy does it look good.
    20210319_135921_HDR.jpg

So I started to close up the tonneau, and another complication, this foam block with a very explicit "do not remove, will void warranty" message written across its base. It's there so when I fold the tonneau back to two sections, it can cushion the tonneau cover to not constantly bang into itself as you go down the road.
    20210319_135954_HDR.jpg

And as you can see, it keeps the tonneau from closing. So definitely can't run this with the tonneau closed, which is unfortunate.

They're both actually mostly the same dimensions, it's just that NATO jerry cans have a wider top due to the three bars vs the Scepter's one bar, the scepter is just a tiny bit deceptively higher.

But just in case, I went out and slapped it in there too.

    20210320_081359.jpg

And just to dispel any notions of just simply moving the foam block, it isn't JUST the block that it keeps hitting.

I’m not crazy about the branding. I’d be more impressed if the “Taco Jerry” were small and on the side or maybe just a “TJ” instead. Or even if is was etched into the aluminum and not cut. Also, using a strap like @elricfate does would look cleaner if there was a notch cut out of the front for the strap to feed through, like the back has.

yeah design stuff is definitely hard to get right in the head to have everyone like it. As far as slots go rather than running a strap which it isn’t truly designed for you could add the locking cable when purchased. Also I don’t actually think it needs any tie down. If you can throw the can out of the holder either dry or full I’ll give you your money back! That would be so impressive.

I thought the same at first but then I figured how much of a pain it would be to weave that front strap into the cutout and changed my mind.

More of a pain in the ass than having to wrap it around the entire thing?
