Same here, we are set financially and are just building up what we can.

I just don't want to be the guy that retires and dies a week later.

    true story -
at my last job, there was an older guy there - he was prepping to retire not long after I started but when the housing market crashed and took the stock market down with it he decided to delay his retirement date. he lost a good chunk of his 401k and stocks so he decided he wanted to keep working and build it back up a bit. his wife was a lot younger than him so he also wanted to make sure that his retirement would be enough for the both of them so that she could retire too.
fast forward 8 years and he sets his retirement date again. about a month after that he starts to feel sick, sees a few docs, nobody can put their finger on it for a few months. then he's diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, pretty advanced. he kept working but bumped up his retirement date a few months.
he died a week before his retirement date.
now had he said, screw it, money isn't that important and we can make do with what's left he would have had 8 good years to enjoy himself

    so, it happens.

Possums are cagy. can get in all kinds of places.worst I had was a groundhog got in the pen with the hounds.they killed him but he tore them all to pieces in the process.and they got bombed by a skunk one time. Feb. and March was worst as these critters breed then. so they are out moving more. you can tell here when you start seeing them laying in the road squished by cars.

A little of this and a little of that.
There was a decent retirement package at my job last August and a lot of people that I worked with retired. I know of 4 that have died already inside of 6 months. Sad, but it’s a fact of life. Nobody gets out alive.

Retire as soon as possible, you’re not promised any tomorrows.

It reminds me of when I was growing up my parents and grandparents and family friends would get together to clog and salt dance. Probably where I first got interested in playing the banjo.

My little morkie went nuts a few nights ago. I can tell when that happens something is in the yard. I opened to the door to let her out onto the deck, thinking was a deer or stray cat. Instead, I immediately smelled skunk. I retreated back into the house and called for her. She was now about 15 -20 feet away, but immediately returned inside. My deck is built to the edge of the yard, into the woods and is off the ground about 5 feet at its endpoint. So, I always fear a skunk may be underneath the deck, just waiting for some unsuspecting creature. I have been buying a huge container of cayenne peeper of the last few years and just sprinkling it off the deck, to deter those stinky skunks. It works until the rain washes it away.

my best memories. my bud at work would do a whole hog on the cooker. everyone would bring a dish.after we ate and were hydrated well someone would get out a guitar, then a banjo, then a fiddle. next thing you know the best bluegrass you ever heard. one time a guy brought his big freetless bass. man them guys could play.one would start picking a tune and they all would pile in. good memories.

In the last few years we have had two long term employees up and die on their desk. Neither one had family or friends so they kept on working.

I've known many truck drivers find themselves in similar circumstances. Dying just short of retirement or right after.
