How much power does it take to run a turbocharger

    I know this is a very complicated question given size, efficiencies at different flow rates and pressures. Every time I search the internet for this all the results I get are on how much power a turbo can increase power by.

    Ideally if you have a formula to calculate that would be the most ideal.

    there's not a minimum or maximum, since you can get pretty much any size turbo. I mean, since squids are putting tiny turbos on crotch rockets, and they have engine sizes as small as 500cc, then there isn't really an answer to your question. You have an engine size, x, that can produce up to a certain volume of exhaust, y. Harness that with a turbo (intercooler'd or no).

    A turbo is free, a supercharger is anywhere from 20-50, sometimes even 60 HP.

    I somehow knew I would get this exact response. A turbocharger is not some perpetual motion machine. It requires energy to spin and move air.

    I bet you could estimate it by calculating the energy required to compress air from atmospheric to the boost pressure, and multiply that by the mass of air compressed and the rate of consumption. Then throw in a fudge factor for energy lost to heat in the process.

    Should the question be something like. How much energy is consumed by the turbo. Since the exhaust is waste does the turbo consume any energy produced by the engine. Bottom line all forced induction systems produce more than consumed. Other wise they would not exist. All systems have pros and cons. Choose the on that fits your defined criteria.
