I still have a slide rule and my E6B (good mental challenge to use it).

General Aviation I like maps, dead reckoning. Strictly clear weather CAVU type flying. Skud running, no thank you. IFR is good only if you are flying more than three times a week (take a friend) to keep your eyes peeled and go under a hood for an hour. If you hear them snoring or panics, look up outside the hood!

My son was asking if I wanted anything for my next adventure (building out the Tacoma) and I said Garmin Overlander is on my wish list, heck even a map light is fine.

Hi everyone, thanks for the words & wishes towards my mom. She's back home, tired but recovering. No stroke, just a thing where her BP drops a lot when she stands up. It's a balancing act now between letting the BP get too high and letting it get too low. Old heart, old arteries, stuff happens. I offered to stay with her last night and she said "nope! I need to get back into my routine as soon as I can." That's how she is.

I use Google Maps for vehicular orienteering. It has a feature that allows you to download maps of areas chosen by you. The data sets can be pretty big so be sure you have enough storage. I use an iPad to get a bigger screen. Google Maps calls out upcoming route information, like Garmin does. What I like about Google Maps is that the data is near realtime. It knows about repair work, accidents, traffic jams, all of it. With the ability to preload the map of an area I'm covered even if there is no cell signal -- although the realtime aspect is lost too. But when I'm that remote I'm usually not concerned about traffic jams. Just tails of dragons!

    Dave

Full disclosure: I'm not anti-tech. Have a Garmin I use on water (I did learn compass heading/time chart navigation as a kid on Chesapeake Bay) and hunting back country. Additionally, AK "Hide, Fish, and Feathers" (ADF&G) has a nice smartphone app that reads map "pdf" files and works without cell signal via phone GPS satellite feature. Very handy for ensuring one is within legal GMU and for marking harvest site, indicates your Lat/Long coords within GMU.
    GMU = Game Management Unit

Big Brother indeed... My wife looked up something on her computer the other day and when she went to use her phone GPS as we were driving a hunded miles from home, the thing she'd looked up on the computer popped up in her phone GPS. She's never linked the phone and her computer in any way. And then as we were following the directions of the GPS it suddenly announced that there was a speed trap ahead... and in a couple of hundred feet there was a Hiway patrol parked on the side of the road.

I'm still using a flip phone.

Drove to Lead, South Dakota yesterday. 700ish miles through Wyoming. It was surreal!!!!! I actually saw a flag that was limp. I've never seen a flag in Wyoming that wasn't blowing like it was going to shred. (a very slight exaggeration) Lots of antelope, eagles, and some deer. The Black Hills are beautiful as usual.
Hope to play some poker on Monday down in Deadwood.

Lead is in my blood! Actually, my bloodline, oops! A goodly number of my ancestors populated these Western States through Lead, South Dakota: Utah, Arizona, Texas, Washington, Oregon, California.

I'd go back to 2008 and my Motorola Tundra flip phone in a heartbeat...when my computer sat on my desk at work or home. Not stalking me from my pocket. :notsure: Double edged sword issue.

I don't think there is a problem at all, at least not for those on Medicare with supplemental insurance. Medicare will either approve or disapprove the code, and that's the end of it. The thing to gripe about is the double-dipping. My wife's Stanford Healthcare required her insurance cards, claiming that they wouldn't charge her insurance for the Covid unless the Government decided not to pay them. That's BS too, because they DID the "Wellness" check on her with blood pressure, blood oxygen, and temperature at both Covid shot appointments. I'll be looking for the charge to Medicare on her next statement. I really want to blow the whistle on that shit 'cause I'm a troublemaker.

Good morning, all! Heading out for a hot air balloon this morning. A bit chilly at 21 but it will warm up pretty quickly once the sun come us.

Alan, it does become an issue because then the provider bills the individual. People here have received bills for over $400 - not for the vaccine because that's free - for the "visit." That's why it's gotten people's attention.

Enjoy the day and stay safe!

We had none of that wellness check. They didn't take temps or blood pressure... just the shot and fifteen minutes sitting around to make sure we weren't gonna have a reaction.

Gorgeous day for a flight. It marked 138 consecutive months of flights for our one pilot. And, with the vaccinations underway, they are starting to schedule passengers again - both pilots and most of our crew are vaccinated. Looking forward to getting out more now!!

@Devious6 , I imagine not all retrieval efforts go smoothly . What's your most memorable recovery and the difficulties that incurred during the pursuits ? Favorite communication devices ?

My annual physical last year was a total FUBAR . Some how my labs weren't processed correctly from the blood draw a week prior. Dr asked why I didn't show for the draw ? Well my arm was perforated as usual with the bruising following . So he couldn't read my labs ,temp and BP was taken as usual, told to go get an arm stick again. There was No listening to my ticker , lungs or concerns , Nada . Upon check out told the office staff not to charge since no physical . It was all run through Medicare full price . WTH ?

Time for a new doc. There's a bunch of them.

Although now that I've said that, a whole slew of them are leaving practice or retiring around here. Some of it is age, some of it is COVID burnout. My mother, wife and I all have to find new PCP docs this year.
