What Has Gone Wrong With Your Tacoma?

I'm a particular guy and these are the issues I've had with my stock 2017 Tacoma SR5 DCLB:

1) Battery replaced at 15K miles due to a bad cell. Covered under warranty.
2) Audio/Navigation unit has shut off randomly, two times in total so far. One was on phone call and I was still connected to the call, I was unable to hear yet I was heard.
3) Noticed third brake light leaked into plastic storage behind rear seats at 30K miles. Water was also in rear seat cushioning. Covered under warranty.
4) Toyota Mud flaps were improperly installed/defective as the paint on fender rubbed off where contact was made. Service manager took truck to body shop at no cost (Warranty Expired).
5) Backed out of my garage and the power surge from turning the wheel caused me to cracking passenger mirror. Replaced myself. Cost ~$45.

6) Truck has been searching for gears while 65-70 at the worst times on highway.
7) Received a notice on frame rotting at 35K miles. Apparently Toyota will spray the frame (external and/or internal spray as per service rep). Pictures were being taken to send to corporate. They are 6 months (at least) behind on this recall because of COVID. All as per service representative.
8) Dealer didn’t honor the Toyota tire package I bought.

Elaborate on #5 please.

 

The pressure sensor in the PS pump bumps up the idle when u turn the wheel, cause a lil surge.

 

One defect: Died (lack of fuel) from stop sign. Restarted after cranking......dealer was a bit crappy about my mods, and no fuel pump for me yet (assumed cut out to be faulty fuel pump)


No visible or other issues detected. Love my truck like a brother.

 

According to 1A Auto, this is a factory recall issue and is addressed by reprogramming the ECM.

Can anyone confirm?

 

Water leaks into the cab from the access cab windows periodically and dealer “couldn’t find anything wrong” even though there’s clearly signs of water going down on the inside of the window.

 

There is a TSB for the surge IIRC.

 

Oh boy. I have an October 2015 built model. I feel like I’ve had every one of the new gen teething issues possible, haha. Let me go grab a keyboard and edit this post.

1. Trans fluid was low from the factory (Dec 2015).
2. Low speed howling (Used duct tape on control arm holes)
3. Hood scoop not flush with the hood.
4. Front fender flare not flush with body.
5. Replaced gauge cluster due to random resets and shutting off.
6. Squeaky leaf springs. Replaced entire leaf pack on both sides (Jun 2016).
7. Took back for still squeaky leaf springs, finally had TSB to correct this after TAS Case was made with corporate later in 2017 below.
8. TSB for trans shifting because it’s horrible (still is, but not as bad with OVTune 2.0).
9. 2017 rear diff leak and bolt tighten.
10. CPS Recall completed in Oct 2017.
11. Also Oct 2017 leaf spring silencer completed.
12. 2020 - 3rd brake light leak at 65K miles, not under warranty. Replaced light after having to drop headliner and all. Some mildew in the back from water getting in.

What else am I forgetting. Hmm, oh added foam rolls to door seal due to super loud howling in wind on the highway.

Tailgate dampener broke 3x and I finally gave up, plastic is shot and it just goes thud now and occasionally falls off. I hear the part I have was changed mid year 2016.

So in short, lots of things? But none that kept me from driving it, always starts and runs. Has never let me down but had a lot of other goofy issues I did NOT expect for a Toyota based on my 2004 and 2009 Tundras.

Just replaced my factory battery last week, made it through the -18 degree two week freeze out here in Kansas, but took it’s toll on it as it was not holding a good charge any longer. Still, that’s over 5 years on the factory batter, so I will not complain about that one!

 

I have been lucky, none to speak of. I think the 19s was a good year

 

Short of the fuel pump, yep

 

I noticed this, but didn't know what it was. I don't believe this is the only vehicle that does this, now that I'm thinking about it.

my 2017:
Blower fan recall - replaced at dealer, no charge.
Water in plate light SB - inspected at dealer, no water, no work, no charge.

No other issues at all. No brake light leak, no fuel pump problem, no window leak issues, no xmsn hunting becuz -- MT, no frame rust, no batt problems (still orig and I maintain it), not a damn thing wrong with this truck. I love it!

 

Nothing so far, but I've owned it less than a year. A couple of quirks, but not enough to say it was something wrong with the truck.

I'll be having the rust recall done soon. Let's face it, no 3rd gen that has this recall is even close to needing a frame replacement. They'll all be sprayed.

I have some noise I can't find coming from the driver's door when I hit certain bumps. It sounds as if the window is moving within the trim, but it'll happen if the window is down too.

I always enjoy the "gear hunting" complaints. The more gears, the more it'll hunt. These trucks (like many today) are geared and programmed for maximum MPG. The Tacoma has 2 overdrive gears. In my research on trucks, I've found that the more gears a truck has, the more people whine about "gear hunting." You should see the complaints about the Ford/GM 10 speed transmission. But there are others who don't let it bother them. I also see people complain that said 10 speed doesn't shift sequentially. Well neither does an 18 speed semi when it is unloaded. Why waste time in a gear if there's no point?

 

Nothing wrong with my 2017 if I had not found this website.

 

Dude it does that on ALL vehicles, even my Tundra. Don't blame the vehicle for your mistakes.

 

I've owned other Toyotas and this has not happened to me before. I'm sure me and the thousands of others who complain about this issue are at fault. Makes sense that Toyota would spend money to reprogram the ECM when it's user fault.

 

Lol you should have driven old school trucks where AC would drop RPM by 600 and then steering would do same.
Stop and think... if you are varying the RPM by the throttle and then you add a load like power steering, no amount of computer is going to keep the RPM steady. Lol on thousands of others too. This is something rarely mentioned here and you know the first rule of complainers... go straight to the internet and complain everywhere.
You should just trade it man. Obviously this truck is not for you.
