I know it looks really bad. The truck is actually coated.

Last summer I did some rust restoration on the front 1/2 of the truck this summer I will do the back.

My buddy sent me this picture from where he lives on Southern Lake Winnipeg from yesterday.

I thought they only do this sort of stuff on Lake Simcoe when they are ice fishing....Lol

It looks like a Tacoma, Also looks like they squared up the ice for a recovery and I know in Ontario insurance won’t cover that not sure about Manitoba.

Back in the day... I had been sent to work in a "northern" ontario community.

Friday night sitting in the local bar havin a "few" beers, and someone comes into the bar and yells out,

"Hey how do you know if the ice is safe to go out on"

Yelled reply from somewhere in the crowd,

"When the tourists stop falling through"

Now being new to the area I thought it was a smartass answer.... and a good chuckle...

lol nope , it was all part of the normal routine... wait for the tourists to test the ice.

Swapping out the winter tires today I noticed a lot of play in the drivers side tie rod end. It looks like an easy enough job to change. Should I stick with an OEM part or is there a better replacement? And will I need an alignment afterwards?

if you can repeat exact amount of turns you may be close, but not perfect, alignment always recommended after any steering/suspension work. Tie rod end bj should have some play if you wiggle with hand. 555 brand is what you need, it's Toyota OEM supplier.

I'll double check the other side tomorrow for comparison but it feels like there is too much play in the ball joint.

Lift up that corner, enough to get the tire off the ground. Then grab the wheel at the 3 and 9 positions and shake it (but don't push it). If you feel any sort of popping or knocking kind of sensation, then shop for a tie rod end. :)

FYI OEM is only $50 at the dealer parts counter.

Do you have an impact wrench? The joint stud likes to spin when you loosen or tighten the castle nut with hand tools.

Grab a torch as well for the tie rod nut, it’ll be seized very well. :sawzall:
