Do you guys have issues with bikes on a hitch rack/tray blocking your brake lights?

Yes. They all do. If you think about it, it's kinda" amazing cops tolerate them. At least cars today have that third brake light.

Shimano 11 speed uses the regular hg 8/9/10 speed cassette.

sram also makes a hg 11 speed cassette but you just have to make sure is 11-42+. I believe the sram cassettes with a 10 tooth cog will be XD drivers.

Edit: my road bike uses a 11 speed HG sram cassette. I would need to check the model though.

Totally. I never really thought about it until recently. I can see why cops overlook it, but I don't want to give them any reasons to pull me over.

I guess more importantly, my question was to make sure the bonehead behind me sees me stopping.

All you really need to go 1x is a narrow wide chain ring up front. I'm running 1x9 on my hardtail with an old sram XO 9 speed derailleur. There's no clutch and I don't have a chain guide but I still hardly ever drop a chain.

If you want the bigger bail out gear though, Shimano 11 speed cassettes should be compatible.

This is absolutely correct. You don't need 11 or 12 speed cassette's. You need the range. The Box 9 speed is a great example of this. Those of us with Eagle will all tell you that most times we shift, we shift two or more times. It's rare I only shift once.

On my fat bikes, I run the standard cassette with a tiny (like 24t maybe?) narrow wide ring up front.

I have the 1UP USA license plate add on for my rack, and it has lights on it for brakes, turn sigs and back up...I have seen other people get the magnetic trailer lights for theirs...

got out for a great ride yesterday on the local yokel trails...it was absolute hero dirt, and hero weather: 55ºF; little wind; crystal clear skies

awesome conditions down by the river

I can get my front wheel on to this log, but not my back yet...stopped for a pic

last week, this area was under 4-5' of water...still moderately squishy, but was able to get through

our little log over thing survived the floods

Yeah I know back when we all started going 1x9 there were no clutch derailleurs. My wife needs the granny gearing. So I’m looking at the Sunrace 11-46 10 speed. Then add the Wolftooth Goat Link and a narrow wide 30 up front. Guess I can try the stock non-clutch XT derailleur first and see if there’s a retention problem.

I was just thinking if I needed cassette and derailleur anyways I could just go 11 speed and only need a shifter extra.

Last summer, we shuttled to the top of crest. We got to the top, annnnddd one buddy left his front wheel in the other car, the other his shoes. Sucks for you boys...
    We've all done it.

Get some bright AF VLEDs in the tails. Plenty bright for anyone to see through the bike.

I need trail recommendations for both Colorado and Southern Utah between 9-13 April. I wanted to hit the Whole Enchilada this year, but it's a bit too early in the season for the higher elevations. The same is true for a lot of trails in CO, so I need some local/expert advice.

    Thanks ahead of time!

I think you can even go down to a 28 tooth narrow wide. If you need to replace a cassette, may as well upgrade though.

Assuming southern co? Grand Junction alone can keep you plenty busy. Almost anything is running in Moab. The St. George area will be good too.
What have you done and liked? What kind of trails you looking for? How much time ya got?

So...you're going to go on an epic ride morning of your wedding right? Hahaha. Get jello legs and really sweaty and tired. It's the only way to go!
