So I've had my 2021 TRD OR for 6 days now. I was showing my dad my new tacoma and he asked if the rear window was automatic and I wanted to show him how slick it was but it took me a minute to find the button even though I've used it a couple times. He asked about one of the other buttons and what it was for and I really wasn't sure! I was looking at all the buttons and it may take a while for me to be completely familiar with them. Are there buttons you use the most often? So far for me the audio and touchreen, the wireless charger phone button ( I suppose I could leave it on but turn it off when not in use) and heated seats button are what I use most. I think there may be some buttons I will rarely use, or even maybe not at all. Have you had your tacoma for a while and never use certain buttons?

The buttons I use the least are the auto high beams, traction control, and power inverter buttons. All located on the left and somewhat out of view. Toyota did great on the layout in my opinion, I know where everything is at.

I saw a neat little trick that I adopted; placing one of those small circular black felt bumper pad stick on's (the kind used for cushioning sliding closet doors, etc) on the button or two that you use most often. I have on on the door unlock button and one on the driver's door window up/ down button. I don't have to take my eyes off the road anymore; just feel for the felt pad and away I go! And if I ever go to sell the truck, they just peel right off.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
The cruise control stalk was the only thing I use regularly that took getting used to. My last 3-4 vehicles have all had cruise buttons mounted on the steering wheel. Took a while to figure out what direction to move the stalk. The fact that you can't look at it while driving didn't help. But I got the hang of it.

I don't use the ECT, power inverter, traction control, rear diff lock and all that stuff. So I'm not worried about memorizing the layout on those.

    Love the sliding rear window!

I'm a bit hesitant to switch "on" the button that looks like it may launch rockets out of the back of my truck. I'll just wait until I am in a situation that I need the rockets.

TBH, I was more exited with how the blue little lights on top and bottom of the buttons looked like, than the buttons themselves. To me, It all felt like I was in an airplane cockpit, or some fancy back to the future rig.

As for the buttons, they felt like I was putting on an old pair of leather gloves. It all fell right in place. Well, all except that darn 4x4 button, I keep hitting it instead of the a/c blower, still.

The only problem I have is the steering wheels controls are different on my 2014 and 2021 Tacomas. They are also different on my wife's 2017 RAV4.

So far as 'muscle memory' for most switches/buttons (Not having to look) about 1-2 months. So far as the touch-screen (My first ever)... That took about 3 hours and a six-pack of beer sitting there and playing with it. (I was taking my time.. LOL!)

Being an old fart and coming from an 01 tundra this 2020 taco still has me learning new things after a year. I try not to muck things up by pushing too many buttons. Long as i can get the truck to run, use the radio, heater, lights, and wipers, thats about all i need. I only recently got deeper into the trucks menu...its like a computer on wheels.

LOL! Yeah, it IS like being in the Space Shuttle if you're new to all the touch-screen stuff (That would be me..) ....
The XM radio came 'standard' (Free for 1 year) when I first bought my Taco 7 months ago. I've never signed up for it (Like I need 400 more stations to choose from) and they finally stopped pestering me (Phone calls) about signing up for it, about a month ago...

I have been paying $60/year for XM service for about 7 years now. Every year I call to cancel and every year we go through the same song and dance. And we always land on "would you be interested in staying on for the same price you paid last year?" and my answer is "of course"! Satellite radio is definitely worth $5.00 per month to me, but not their standard asking rate of $20/month.

Took minutes for the layout. Like others have said, Toyota did a pretty good job with the layout of everything.

I still think they missed an opportunity when placing the ECT button. Should have been located on the shifter in the AT's

LOL! Yeah, I'm with ya.. LOL!
I took my ol' 95' Dodge B2500 van out today (After sitting all winter ... Camping rig) to get some fresh gas and get the battery charged back up ... And it seemed like I was driving a Fred Flintstone mobile.. Kept trying to push buttons that didn't exist, as I'm used to driving my Taco now...
But as you say ... The few things you actually NEED ... As long as they work, I'm good.
