Any of yall know how warm a differential should be running? The one in my taco was 109 when I got back yesterday, and it was only 65 outside. I suspect i may have a failing bearing.

Seems fine to me, that's not a big temp delta for something thats a high pressure application.

I think that's on the low end, I think 150-175 under normal load is acceptable and up to 200 for heavy load is acceptable

Ok, thanks! Good to know. 50 degrees over ambient seemed like a lot for the driving I was doing, but I didn't have any real idea what it should be.

There's been a noise under there that its had since I got the truck and haven't been able to place (might even be the tires). I had the toolbox out yesterday and nothing on the back wall of the cab so any noise coming from under the bed was very noticeable and I began to get suspicious.

I think temp wise you have nothing to worry about. Here's another data point for you

Dang. Definitely within range then. We'll see what it does once the weather gets hot.

It could be bearings, they do get noisy over time, could be gears too, they make a good bit of noise as everything wears in over time and the lash loosens. I wouldn't expect either of those to manifest as a huge temp increase though

At least until they fail completely, at which point I'd notice for other reasons

That said, trailer bearings and railcar axle bearings do get hot when they fail.

It's a band-aid if it cures the noise, but throw some 80-140 in next time you change the soup in there.

    - yep
    - Mostly, just readjusted them a few weeks ago when i put the axle back together.
    - reg cabs are too cool to have carrier bearings
    - ujoints are tight and greased

It might be the tires. I've only driven it with these tires on it, and its not any of the usual bad noises I'm familiar with.
