His looks pretty bad. It has broken off way too short. He would need that U-FIX baseplate for sure. But I worry about that input shaft.

Ha! I did not realize you were still in here setting these guys straight. I thought you'd given up on this thread....

If he's trying to run this CM bearing (which I dont advise!) he may be able to. I was able to do so with almost no part of that quill sleeve remaining. Let me dig up and share some pictures of how my quill looked when I installed this POS...

I also have that base plate handy if anyone wants to reverse engineer something for those of us with broken quills.;)

    Bite your tongue. I’m here.

I thought that we talked about this. Using the Tilton setup intended for the T56 along with that U-fix baseplate would work awesome for damaged quills.

    Yes correct, we did.

Maybe I didn't read back all the way, I thought he was trying to run the CM bearing on a broken quill. missed the Tilton part

I am going to be moving next month so at the moment just don’t want to have to tow truck to new place. My frame has the lovely rust too, with Toyota saying recall is expired on it. I’m planning on replacing frame later this year so I would be tearing everything apart again. At that point I was planning on fixing everything more properly. Haven’t looked into rc62f but truck will basically be weekender at lake not daily.

edit rc62f sounds like fun too

what about just welding a cylinder onto where it broke to act as a quill

u gonna replace ur own frame?
i wonder how much the frame costs
    seems like a cool project
and more stuff that can be done while the frame is out, like boxing the channels (if that's even a good thing to do)

Well, I found you an RA60F trans. It’s not cheap tho. It would be basically $2k. Would ship out of NY. 115k miles on it. 6mo warranty.

Let me know if you’re interested.

If it were me, considering what you want to use the truck for, I’d stick to the RA trans. Buy a new bell housing and have a local transmission shop go through it and replace what all is needed.

Similar money could likely buy you an RC62F as well. But, that would be more work on your part to install.

Found a couple salvage frames for around 1k, sand basting and powder coating probably another grand. buddy of mine used to run a body shop so lot of work but not worth anything with rusted frame.

haven’t had any luck finding just a bell housing, trans swap is my most likely route. I found a rc62f for $1400 with 29k miles. from reading your rc post looks like driveshafts and alter shifter location are the biggest differences, was there other fabrication involved that I forgot?

Driveshafts from an automatic can be used with the RC62F, shifter location requires a bit of modification to the floor or transmission (probably easier for most to do the floor), use your original back up switch. Shouldn't need other fab beyond that, aside from wiring brackets, and depending on how you setup the clutch hydraulics.

As for repairing the RA, you'd be looking at about $600 for a new case, or about $1100 for a new case, input shaft, bearing, and seal kit. Then of course the labour to do the installation. If you cleaned up the input shaft so that it's smooth, I suspect you could get away with reusing it.

Replacing the transmission with a used unit is probably the cheapest option if you can find one near you for a reasonable price (I've seen a few decent units for around $1000-1200), next cheapest would be to repair your current transmission, first with just the housing, next with the housing and shaft. The RC is a good option, but would require finding the transmission and buying shafts, probably some clutch stuff and mounting, then you need to do modifications, etc.

Honestly, I wish I wasn't so busy with school at the moment, or I would seriously start looking into developing my replacement RA quill. It's probably going to happen sometime this summer. There needs to be a properly thought out, cheaper option to repair these things properly.

That’s a great price for that transmission.

No, no fabrication necessary to make it work if you use the RC release hardware.

Thought I would share my experience with the Throw Out Bearing squeal on this forum.

    I have a 2007 4.0 6 Speed Tacoma.

I got a shop to replace my OEM clutch with a LUK clutch, after a couple days of driving I noticed a metallic chirp sound any time I engaged or disengaged the clutch. Shortly after I noticed a squealing sound coming from around the bell housing area.

When I went back to the shop who replaced the clutch, they said it could just be a faulty throw out bearing that was put in, so they once again put in a brand new thowout bearing. This only got rid of the noise temporarily, the squeal and chirp came back. I decided to look online and found many threads about this seemingly common issue with these 6 Speed transmissions.

While I spent months reading online, trying to find a solution to this problem, the noise continued to get worse and worse. The options I found to try and solve the issue were either:

    - Clutch Masters Hydraulic Release Bearing
    - URD Throw Out Bearing Sleeve Kit
    - Toyota TSB "Fix"

After reading about people's experiences with the CM Hydraulic Release Bearing (Loss of fluid, inconsistent pedal feel)

I decided against that option because of the mentioned unreliability of the product.

I finally decided to go with a combination of the URD Throw Out Bearing Sleeve Kit and the Toyota TSB.

I had a shop install the URD Kit, while also replacing the original Slave Cylinder and Fork Support that came with my truck with the updated TSB parts.

So far (drive from the shop to my house), there has been no squeal or chirp. I will periodically post updates on whether or not my truck remains squeal and chirp free.

Noticed you're from Edmonton, I'm going to assume that you're not the Jeff Lange I know who likes to play Firestorm Armada... or are you?

Would like to see that 86 sometime.

I am not that Jeff Lange. I have never played Firestorm Armada, but I’ll look into it, haha.

86 will be out and about next month I hope!

It's a tabletop wargame. One plays with models of little spaceships and they shoot at each other and you roll a lot of dice.

Super nerdy. When I nerd out, I out-nerd real nerds.
