I'm honestly pushing to put serial on the next version of one of our products. Ethernet is a pain in the dick when you don't have the ip address and your only way to log in is to drag a freaking monitor and keyboard out to BFE with you.

That said, it'll be USB serial - because the port is smaller

I wholeheartedly agree with this. For industrial stuff serial is such much nicer and I'd rather use that every day of the week

But alot of the big sights that have numerous cells talking to one another, they need the speed ethernet can provide

Plus what @Blue92 said about the distance thing makes it a challenges

Yeah, absolutely. Serial for configuration, ethernet for production is the only sane way to do it nowadays.

A previous company I worked at had a legacy product that used i2c extenders to connect various parts of the product. It was so janky. Had I not quit, I was going to make it PoE.

Oof... i2c is homeowner grade stuff I thought?

Never personally installed anything requiring PoE, I deal strictly ethernet switch installs for all my customer panels. And I got to use a special HDMI for a 27" touchscreen on 72x72 panel I built for a recycling plant. That one was cool, 14VFDs with 14 Arc reactors, all fuse protected

i2c == inter-integrated circuit. AKA, its supposed to be between chips on the same board - not running 50ft over a twisted pair cable. The product would randomly lock up and they could never pin down why.

Yeah I wouldn't expect my PoE in that kind of thing, sounds like everything has power pretty conveniently already.

Sounds like a heck of a panel!
