To bad there isn't some sort of monitored camera system that can be attached to a phone and a liquid dispensing pod that drops undiluted hydrochloric acid on the asshole.

Not to get off track but it's 70% because the consequences are no longer a deterrent. Let that sink in.

Not really. These numbers have been high for a fairly long amount of time and there are many studies to back this up. European countries hover around 20%, a big difference. It’s not about justifying or forgiving offenders; it’s about minimizing the damage and impacts on society.

    For example:
Joe Dirt goes to prison for catalytic converter theft. Joe has no useful skills or trades. Joe gets released. No skills; people don’t hire ex-cons, Joe goes back to prison.

I live in a prison city in Texas and the units here don’t even have A/C. You have all these offenders baking in the sun, learning no skills that could benefit society, and when they get released no one will hire them. Many just revert back to their old ways, despite wanting to go on the straight arrow, hence the high rate.

I didn’t mean to trigger anyone, I was just providing a possible solution to catalytic converter theft. It’s all perspective. You can complain about the issue and offer no solution or you can do something about it. And what we have been doing hasn’t been working.

I work in the Criminal Justice system my friend. What we are doing in Washington State is not working. In the town I live in the catalytic converters are being stolen by the handful nightly and on a weekly basis.
At least where I live we have basically decriminalized all criminal traffic driving except DUI. We have decriminalized Theft, Criminal Trespass, Possession of Drugs and Drug Paraphanalia and the list goes on. Thieves walk into malls and grocery stores and steal what they want when they want to. They aren't afraid of the police or the court system. When the consequences are no longer a deterrent this is what you get.

Here in Washington we have basically legalized the possession of small amounts of heroin, meth, cocaine, ecstasy and any other hard drug you can think of. Folks need to steal to keep those habits supported and fortunately we have a criminal justice system that says "go for it" we are looking the other way.

This will be my last post on this subject. Hope you all are doing well in Texas. Sounds like a better state than Washington.

This is why I ordered a full skid plate before my truck even came in. Seattle is even worse, every week I see blatant property crime, theft, harassment, and worse. I work in an ED and we get people every day on psych holds because the city refuses to prosecute people for things and it’s really the only options cops have. It’s sad.

Ah, good point. I wasn’t thinking about this on a local level but that makes sense. Yeah, we haven’t experienced that level of decriminalization here, but Texas has its own faults as well. Sorry for getting off topic and thank you for the input.

My city has also experienced a series of catalytic converter thefts, so much so that the city issued a statement. Most occur at night here. Heck, two years ago a ring of criminals broke into over 100+ cars in one night, including the police cars parked at a hotel for a conference. If someone wants something bad enough, they will get it.

kinda funny.. i just took off my rci trans skid plate off yesterday.. gonna send it out to extend the side wider to cover enough so they cant get a saw to the catts... weld a plate 4-5 inch wider on each side should do the trick...

That's the kind of thing I'm looking for. With the rise in thefts you'd think there'd be a market for some wider plates that cover the cats.

In California shoplifting is allowed as long as you steal under $950.00....you only get a ticket.

Stainless sheet skids covering the cats far enough back to keep a saw off the pipe. Stainless torx pan or button heads, probably on top so it’s only accessible with tools. It would make it too much trouble. Yes, it could be cut, but stainless is so hard it will eat sawblades quickly.
Can’t defeat the bolts with vice grips, can’t grind or saw them off, stainless sheet eats blades, makes it too much trouble and vastly increases the risk of getting caught.
My truck is garaged, but this thread is making me a little paranoid. I might look at building this.
