Nail in BFG KO2? Advice wanted!

While installing some new fog lights today I found this nail in my pretty new 285/75/16 bfg ko2... (5k miles)

Sorry I’m a newb. I haven’t noticed psi decrease yet... my Tacoma has 6k miles.

I bought these tires from the dealership as part of my suspension upgrade.

where, who, what should I do? Best route that’s $$$ friendly.

Get a cheap plug kit and plug it yourself. It will be fine. If you take it to a tire shop, they will tell you to replace the tire because it’s too close to the sidewall.

Get it done right and have it patched

 

Plug it yourself and keep it as a spare.

The shoulders of the tire see tremendous amount of flex when cornering and when aired down. A patch or plug will not hold long-term there.

 

Your safety is worth a new tire. Spend the money and replace it. By the way it does look too close to the sidewall and if it were me I'd replace it.

 

Best kit I could find… solid handles with grip not metal and hollow (supposedly professional grade plugs, if that’s even a thing). But I have used it once recently and i wasn’t disappointed. it doesn’t have a nail puller/pliers so I need to get something that I can fit in the box

 

I would take it to a tire shop and get it repaired. I had a screw removed from mine (for under $20) and put another 30k miles on that tire.

 

I just seen the position- i think I read the rule of thumb as the first lugs from the edge are a negative.

Mine was just past, walking the tight rope

 

Professionally on a customers vehicle I would replace the tire.
On my personal vehicle I would patch it and keep on driving with it on the rear axle.

If I repair a tire it is to get out of the dirt and to a tire shop for a proper replacement. I’m not trusting my life to one of my field repairs for longer than I have to lol. Y’all are suggesting he do a field repair and then just live with it

 

You, if it fails, it’s a slow leak. It”s not going to blow up or do anything crazy. Btw, I’ve used plugs many times and never had one fail.

 

I have used cheap ass plug kits from HF and Walmart on just such an occasion.

They have never failed and the tires have lived on for the rest of their expected life.

Go to Discount/America’s Tire. If it’s repairable they’ll do it for free.
I’ve also plugged many of my tires in my lifetime with zero failures. One was a BFG AT, and it had to have had at least 8 plugs in it (I was a poor teenager).
I’ve always used Safety Seal plugs.

 

Plug it. You'll hear a lot of hand wringers telling you it's dangerous or why risk your life for a $200 tire. But you'll never see even one example backing up the claim that a plugged tire will explode, kill babies, harm the ozone layer or reduce the size of Kim Kardashian's ass. Worst case, it will be a leaker, but I've never had one cause any problems. I've generally had to use the reamer to make the hole bigger first to get the plug in.

I get why mfgs and shops advice against it (Lawyers) I'd do the same in their shoes, but really it's just stupid to trash a good tire instead of plugging it.

Use at your own risk. Not for highway use. If leak lasts for more than 6 hours call a tire technician. Avoid use if taking narcotics. Use under adult supervision. Not for sale in TN,OK,AK,OR,MA or Sri Lanka. Children under 12 use half a plug. Not for use by children. Contains substances known to cause cancer in California. If you experience any sidewall effects discontinue use immediately and contact Tire Barn. If you can't afford a plug we may be able to assist with a reduced cost program. Do not eat plugs.

 

Pull it out and see what happens. It looks like a roofing nail, which are typically pretty damn short.

If it does leak then take it in to a tire shop and see what they say.

Edit- might also be a screw with the head almost totally worn off. Either way, if it hasnt leaked yet you might be lucky

 

So, there is no road hazard warranty coverage on this tire? You said it was fairly new and that you bought it from a dealer and most offer some sort of limited time road hazard coverage.
