New to Toyotas. My Tacoma now has 10,000 miles on it. Had it in for service and my report for maintenance says rear brakes 3/10. At 5,000 miles it was 5/10. Fronts are still 10/10. Is this due to the automatic limited slip activated by rear brakes? It was marked with yellow indicating service will be needed in the future. Thanks

I’ve got 190k on my rears and they’re just about finally worn out. Gonna replace them at 200k. I got 130k out of the front pads.

I’ve replaced front/rear brakes twice in the 200k+ miles I’ve owned it.
Rear brakes don’t do much at all, no way in hell you should be replacing front or rear brakes this soon.

I'll go out on a limb and say your dealership has no friggin clue as to the condition of your rear brake shoes. Heck most of them don't even rotate the tires like they should. Unless you physically saw the tech with the rear drums off and the tech inspecting them, I'd call bullshit.

Now all that said, I'm sure there is a really diligent tech that works for a phenomenal dealership that really cares about customer service AND there is some odd issue or usage with your truck that would cause rapid rear brake shoe wear in 10,000 miles. But I'd say you have a better chance at winning the lottery.

OP you can inspect the rear shoe condition pretty easily yourself if you want. Just requires you to slide under your truck. Should be a inspection hold on the inside of the drum. Usually a little rubber plug you remove and shine a light in.

These are my rears at 71k. I replaced them when I did the front. I had to do the front because my rotors were warped by the dealer using impact wrench on lugs at 10k mile free service. I would avoid the dealer if possible......

Pull a wheel, pull a drum, measure shoes your self.

Unless they are dragging all the time there is no way to be that worn in 10k.

My guess is the drums have never even been off for someone to see the shoes.

Fuckin scum bag dealerships. Most likely just trying to scam you. If you're really worried about it, take it to a 3rd party local mechanic. Then when u get the report call the dealer and let them know their practices are terrible

I agree with a lot of the above.

I go to the dealer for my annual inspection, close to my house and they have never tried to charge me for outrageous un-needed services, yet*. Last year the rear brakes showed yellow at 45k took it in a few weeks ago a year later with 48k, they showed green.

They did tell me I needed a throttle body cleaning for $190ish but I just bought a can of cleaner for $10 and will do it myself in the next few weeks.

One of the benefits of drum brakes are their longevity. If something is wrong with the truck that's making the pads wear that quickly, then they should be fixing it under warranty in my opinion.

Dealer wouldn't even replace my warped rotors under warranty. I asked them at 15k and 20k.....

My local dealer uses "Toyota Cam" yes, the tech has tires off for rotation and brake inspection and discusses and shows every item inspected.

I'm tempted to paint "Kilroy was here" on the skid plate to see if they get it. It's a granddad joke!

Agree, there has to be a problem. My 2nd gen had 196,500 miles when I sold it and still on original shoes.

Make sure they remember there are drums on the rear. I had them tell me my rear pads were low at 10 or 15k.

My response was - my brake shoes are low after 10-15k?

Their response - oh yeah. Those are drums and the material is thinner. No, you're good.

I usually drop it in the morning with three chilled Coffee Drinks. "High Brew Double Expresso" with a note for "service writer" "Service Tech" "Oil Change Tech" One video had the tech say thank you,
another one no comment. Asked my service writer and he looked a little sheepish!

I replaced my front at 50k miles, my wheels are -11 off-set and 265-65/17 BFG before I replaced them. Wondering which caused the premature wear because it can't be me.
Moreover, I haven't even looked at the rears, but I will at the next rotation and expect them to be just fine.

I stay away from the stealreship If at all possible

The Service MGR. said I should be OK, geez I would hope so at 10,000 miles.
And I know vehicles and have worked on them for years. Rear drum brakes take a long time to wear out unless something malfunctions.
