I'm new here and was wondering what the price range is from just a shell to something better?

A shell of what? To a better what?

Wrist watch shell will be very inexpensive. Won't indicate time too well.
    Turtle shells are illegal.
Sea shells are found on a beach.

My point. Be more specific, please.

I assume OP meant a camper shell such as Leer/Snugtop/ARE? If yes, I have been looking into buying a camper shell new or used. Not many used shells out there and I am in Orange County, CA. I found 2 used ones that are compatible for Tacoma DCSB and I contacted them right away but no response so far. Long story short, I got several quotes from local dealers and for a basic cab hi camper shell, I cannot find anything less than $3000 brand new for either Leer/Snugtop/ARE. The quotes are between $3000 to $4000 with tax and installation for glass frame rear door, either with windoor or sliding windows, keyless entry, and headliner. One brand that sells a decent looking shell is Ranch, they are about $2200+ but I am not sure about the quality. I think I will end up buying a brand new one in a few months.

When I was searching the used market I was looking anywhere I could drive to and back in one day. I was also looking into color match or truck bed liner. I ended up buying new and got everything I wanted on it.

Wheels, tires, intermittent wipers, better rearview mirror...
I got one right here - on the Tacoma World classifieds. It is an A.R.E. CX Classic with tinted glass, locking windoors, Yakima rails, bed carpet kit, nice clamps, and the seller helped me install it. All for $2100.00
