My 2017 was purchased new with 2 fobs that each contained 1 mini key inside as well as 1 tailgate/glovebox key.

You would have had to obtain something in writing at the time of purchase from the stealership in order to hold them financially responsible for the second key you're missing irregardless of their reason for it being missing. You might get lucky from corporate or the general manager at the stealership if they're feeling generous, but I wouldn't count on it.

One fob is my regular, the other stays by the headboard in case I need to set off the alarm at night, and honestly not sure exactly where the physical key is, but I have a couple keyrings I don't use anymore so it's likely attached to one of those.

Yeah, the physical key is a easy one to lose since its rarely used. I keep mine on a keychain in my truck with the keys to my gas can locks, kayak lock, and bike locks. Im not sure why I keep it around though, in 2 years I have never used it once.

Bought mine last week and only recieved one normal key and one mechanical. Here is the notice that came on mine. Should be getting another key for free and the mechanical key should be able to start the truck.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
So, what is the valet key good for if you have a new Taco with auto start? Glovebox, door and tailgate is all the valet key gets you into, right?

Isn't that the opposite of what a valet key used to be good for? You used to be able to lock something in your console/glovebox with your regular key and then give a parking valet the valet key that would open the door and start the car but not grant him access to the console/glovebox.

I guess my question is, what is the valet key really good for? If I take the Taco to a fancy restaurant, what am I supposed to give the valet? The remote starter with the keys detatched?

Bought used and got 1 key.:anonymous:

    New should come with multiple.

Bought a second key blank, programmed it at home, and had it cut by a locksmith.

That is a question that I've been pondering as well. The glove box key is stuck in the fob. If I have a cap that is locked AND my tailgate is locked (or if the tailgate lock operates with the door lock), it appears that there is no secure location in my Taco unless I remove the funky key from the fob.
    I'm not liking that scenario.
    Am I missing something?

Same as me. Looks like JAN TRD OR 2021s didn't get the valet key

Try manually locking the tailgate with the key, see if it unlocks with the fob. The way I see it, you give the valet your fob, keep the physical key from the fob to lock the glove box and the tail gate. They can then only open the truck and start it.

Correct. Give the valet the remote with the mechanical key removed. Works out well this way because the mechanical key is also where the keychain (with your house keys) is attached.
