    heck yeah.

Im 5’10. I slept across the back seat for a few trips in the past, it’s a bit cramped.

a rooftop tent is about a grand if not a bit more plus cross bars. Plus it takes up the bed. I use the bed for bed stuff. Firewood, mountain bikes, kayaks, etc. the bed is only 5 ft. And if it’s raining then the bed (with a soft topper) is meh. And if it’s 95 degrees in Texas heat you can run the AC in the cab

I show up to camp and my camp site is done. It’s water tight - if it’s pouring rain I don’t have to worry. And when I get home I don’t have to dry out a tent.

I’m 5’10 and I laid down on it last night end to end fully extended. Plenty of space.

Downsides are obvious and I’m not going to ignore them. It’s not for everyone, that’s for sure. But for me - I am freakin pumped.

That’s awesome man, glad that works for you! I guess I didn’t realize it was that wide. I was guessing it was about 5 feet across which seemed awfully compressed but it sounds like it’s a bit wider than that.

No it's front to back not side to side! I took out the passenger seat.

It's about 2 ft wide 6 ft long.

Inspiration came from a mix of the new F150 and @Stig's build he did something very similar.

Know this is old but do you by any chance have the link for the mattress pad you used?

When you said “across” I got a different picture. I did the same thing years ago in a 2-door sedan removing the passenger seat and rear bench and laying in a chaise lounge pad. Bedding was always warm but no company.

Anyone do a half platform? Wanna make it so my 9 year old can sleep up on the platform with cargo boxes underneath him and I can sleep lower on the actual bed. I really like being able to sit up comfortably in the bed.

I just saw that a minute after I posted this message. Pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. I wonder if anyone has found a rigid plastic setup or some other material that's lighter besides wood.

I did research on High density plastic...it is heavier than wood

I have seen some stainless units but don’t know weight or cost. I have a full box made from birch ply and laminated pine boards...without drawers it is less than 70 lbs. I pull the drawers and slide it out all the time to make full bed accessible. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the ideas. Yep I want to make this easy to take out and store in the garage. Will find some brackets to easily connect and disconnect the two pieces of wood while still be solid to sleep on.

So I created a back and side board system and added some countersink carriage bolts that now integrates and locks all my pieces together. Might work for you. Just a thought.

I used pvc as the frame for mine with carpeted birch for the platform. Pretty solid and I can pull it all out in a few minutes.

Rebuilt the camping drawer set up during the latest CO snowstorm. Just got to clear stain and seal it now to handle the Rocky Mountain elements. First set up lasted 4 years with out staining or treatment.

I’m going to try and turn the larger of the two covers into a camp table. Just have to sink some threads and build some removable legs.BE33FFB0-3326-48EC-9A2B-36E19B42EF93.jpgD36E6639-E6B9-4F3C-B028-F4875A288855.jpg77A82DAE-1A7D-4754-A975-9ABF84C1F620.jpg

Definitely lighter. Affordable? I dunno. I've used some of their stuff at work, but in fancy aerospace grade.

PVC and I are best friends and I use it for all kinds of goofy shit, but this one has worked out great. I cut small lengths of pvc about 2" long, and then I cut a section out lengthwise. I mount 3 on each panel (2 in back and one in front). They then just "snap" onto the pvc frame underneath. They also act as a hinge so I can just unclick one side and lift it up.

No where near as cool or bombproof as some of these amazing setups, but it is perfect for my needs, and if i break anything $.20 of pvc will make it right.
