That's why I like my GPSmap 640. I have everything on it including bluechart for offshore.

I have a Garmin 265WT that i bought on closeout, so the price couldn't be beat. In the fam we've got a 205W, a 765T, and another 265WT.

The traffic is sometimes a little off, but it does help. Usually gets me out of some rough stuff.
the map detail is pretty incredible. It finds most of the forest roads and is usually helpful for offroading in the truck.

I've used Magellans in rental cars, they were terrible for input, were ugly, and often wrong.
I've never used Tomtom but I know enough people who converted to Garmin.

for Garmin I would recommend a model with
    -free FM traffic
    -lane assist
-multi-point trip planning. This is awesome for vacationing, you can enter in multiple destinations, edit them, add more, rearrange, or have the unit rearrange for most efficient travel.

I'd be really interested in the models that learn traffic patterns and re-route you to less busy, faster routes.

I would probably get the 1435 or 1430 myself.

I just added red light and speed camera POI to my Garmin. It is a nice little upgrade!

Don't get an Insignia. Got one free with an iPod purchase from Best Buy. It works pretty good, but the maps are not upgradeable.

Just got back from Best Buy.

Bought my stepson an iPod touch for Christmas from Best Buy.
They GAVE me an Insignia GPS for free with the iPod.
The Insignia sucked, so returned it for $129.99 credit. (Kept the iPod)
Used the credit to buy a Garmin 1300LM with lifetime maps on sale for $149.99 (regularly $219.99)
    Garmin for $20! WIN!

I've got a Garmin 255 that I love. Loaded it up with topo maps and works great for driving around up in the mountains.
I just needed a small, no-frills GPS w/o any extraneous features. the 255 fit the bill perfectly.
