How much negative offset on stock suspension?

Hi everyone, I just got an 09 Trd sport. I bought it completely stock, so looking to make it look more aggressive. I don't have the money to lift right now so I am going to keep suspension stock. I really like the look of negative offset, so I am wondering what is the max I can make my wheels stick out without encountering problems?

Welcome to TW. Is your plan adding wheel spacers to acquire the aggressive stance? What tire size are you currently running?

 

I currently have stock rims and tires which are 265/65/17. I want new rims so will probably go with rims that have a negative offset, just don't know how negative I can go.

 

Most stock rims backspacing is around 5.4". Most aftermarkets that can tolerate a larger tire and achieve the aggressive stance are 4-4.5" backspacing. A wheel with a 4.5" backspacing will stick out an inch further than your current setup if the wheel width( 7") is the same.

 

Your stock wheels most likely have a +30 mm offset (1.18 inch). As you approach 0 (zero) offset, the wheel will move out.

The width and profile of the tire will play into the clearance also.

Suggest you find a wheel/tire store who would let you try different combos for fit. Don't know if such a store exists.

You could try cranking your steering to the lock, measure the clearance between the tire and body. This will give you an idea of your current clearance. Begin subtracting from that.......

When my suspension was stock, with stock TRD Sport rims and stock 265/65/17 tires (3rd gen rims and tires).
I put on some 1.25" Spidertrax wheel spacers that made the tires stick out 1.25" (+30mm offset - 31.75mm = -1.75mm offset).
I had no issues with rubbing while driving, except for the occasional light rubbing on the passenger side when backing up in reverse and fully cranked.
I think I had around 1/4"-1/2" of clearance for normal driving. With the stock mud flaps on.

I didn't take any pictures specifically showing how much more the tires stick out. But I posted some pics from when I went camping last year.
They stick out enough that you can see the edge of the back tires in the side mirrors.

Just for reference. Stock tacoma rims are 17x7.5" with a 30mm offset which equals to a backspacing of 5.4". I personally like to use measurements in backspacing value versus offset since it's alot easier to measure with a ruler to get a BS value on a loose wheel especially if you are buying used. (I don't trust a seller's word).

 

Go with an 8 or 8.5” wheel with 0 to -10ish offset. It’ll be flush to a very slight poke and you should have any issues hitting the cab mount when you get bigger tires

 

I have stock length control arms and SCS F5s with 4.50" backspacing (16x8 with 0 offset) and 265/75/16 tires. They are nearly flush with the flares.

 

What he said. 8” wide 0 offset has the perfect amount of poke and will fit a wide range of tire sizes with the least amount of cutting.

 

subbing for the same kind of info...am looking to get 275/60r16's - or something near that width - and have the same questions...looking to get American Racing Outlaw II's in 8" for my 2021 SR5so it seems like it should work

 

That tire is less than 1/2” wider and 2” shorter than factory. It should fit no problem. Why so small of a tire? It will look funny IMHO

 

I was just throwing out numbers...I have 245/60r16's from the factory on now...I think I truly want wider and a bit taller for now...so 275 or even 285/75r16 is probably more correct numbers wise? I definitely want wider....

A lift will happen down the road, but that is a luxury mod for me really...my intention at first is to not do any hardcore off roading/overlanding...i need to get more ready for regular fire roads and snow first...

 

265/75r16 is a popular size and won’t rub aside from mudflaps maybe. 285/75r16 is a taller wider tire (the typical “33”) and will have more rubbing issues and power/mpg implications.

 

I just got the F5s with the -25mm offset on stock TRD sport suspension and they rub a lot on a left hand turn (thanks taco lean) and a little on a full hard right hand turn. So I am going with Bilstein 5100 all the way around, OME 2884s up front, and a Deaver AAL in the back. Installing on Monday and will report back with how much clearance I have after.
