How many of you have used plasti dip on your trucks? and how well does it come off? I'm considering coating my fender flares, badges and possibly a tool box with it (gloss black), but I want to make sure I'm not opening a can of worms first!

As long as you put thicker coats on you can peel it right off. I dipped my old civic si and messed up the hood so I peeled it right off to start over

I did like 4 coats on my emblems. Haven't had to peel them off or anything but it was nice and thick so I doubt it will be an issue.

The first coat is a light one followed by 3-4 heavier.

I did badges and nerf bars on an old Expedition of mine. After 2 years the badges were still fine and just a couple of small areas on the nerf bars needed touching up. Like others have suggested, I used about 4 coats.

Just be aware that the longer it sits on there the harder it will be to get off. Sure, you lay it down thick and the next day it'll peel off with ease. Try that again in a couple of years after baking in the sun everyday. Detailers and body shops have so many horror stories about trying to remove old plast-dip.

I dipped a set of wheels and they started to peel and blister after one track day. The dip hardened and wasn't easy to get off - although not a nightmare either. But that was only ONE day of excessive heat which caused this.

I love the idea of plasti-dip but have found it's massively overused. It's great for some applications but nowadays people are using it instead of paint on all kinds of things and IMO are being short sighted.

I did my wheels. Turned out pretty good. It's been about a year, no peeling other than where hit by a rock offroading. For number of coats, youtube and there is some guy with bulging biceps that goes through the process. Watch him multiple times and mimic.

Thanks, like I said, I intend to do my fender flares, but I want the option of removing it if I don't like it.

I also bought a can of derp yesterday and plan to dip my emblems and grille frame. I was wondering if anyone has used it on their grille or anything on the front of the truck. Specifically, I'm wondering if it'll come off when I'm trying to clean bugs off of the front.

That's what I got a can for as well... the chrome bezel frame around my sR5 grille...waiting for warmer weather.

I think I am going to tape off instead of removing the grille. I really dont want to F with all of the brackets and such...

I did the lower bumper middle with it. It is about 2 years old and holding up very well as it is front and center. I expected it to be chipped all up by now.

The longer it stays on over time, the harder it is to remove. I used PD on wheels before and never again. Impossible to remove, color fading, harder to clean, and touch up is very difficult after expected damage from wheel balancing. I expect the same negatives when using PD on fender flares or toolbox. I would go with rattlecan paint. PD is ok on items such as emblems that don't get abused or exposed to much contact.

I just did my fender flares about 10 days ago. I did seven coats waiting about 20 min. between coats. The paint on my fender flares was peeling and faded and didn't match the trucks paint at the top of the flares. I screwed up the first one by not waiting long enough for it to dry. Ended up peeling the whole thing off and starting again. I'm pretty happy with the look now.

I’ve plasti dipped my chrome grille since I bought the truck. Each time the dip has been on for 5 years before needing redoing.

I have had my wheels on my 2015 dipped grey since 2016 including getting new tires as well as inside my retrofits and my badges before I de-badged. I just dipped my wheels on my 2020 STI before winter and before the tacoma had a 2012 Civic SI with the wheels and badges dipped for 70,000 miles... I like dipping anything I can for some reason... On wheels it is unbelievable to me how it lasts when done right and how resilient it is. Use 1 can per wheel.

I think for your application it would work great with the exception of the toolbox (and I may be wrong) but with it being a surface you would be setting things on and such it might scratch and tear (not a big deal). You can try maybe 6 coats of black and 2 coats of glossifier and see what happens.

If you are doing your fender flares or any body panels or anything with a taped off edge, you will want to do wet coats and peel the tape before it dries. I have not used it personally on body panels for long term use, but I know many guys that have done chrome rear bumpers in black and such with great success.

4 can of black total (1 per wheel) 2 cans of copper metalizer (did not need a 3rd). before and after 2020 STI

probably 65,000 miles and 2 sets for tires on the grey dip below:

I did my wheels about 2+ years ago with all sorts of weather and road salts, no peeling. I haven't tried to peel it yet but I know I have 3 coats black, 4-5 coats Gold/Bronze and 2 coats Clear on each wheel. I bought the DipYourCar.com wheel kit (bronze/gold) and a couple cans of Satinizer Clear Coat. DYC has great videos on how to properly use dip. This is the first time I actually paid attention to how I applied dip and prepped, and guess what? It makes a big difference in the final product!!!!!

The Satinizer Clear Coat (and otheres) have UV protection to avoid fading. I haven't noticed any fading since I did mine, it is not garaged and is outside 24/7. Also, like others have said making sure the 1st coat is a light "tack" coat essentially and go on thick from there. Not to the point of getting runs though. It likely won't get 100% coverage the first 2 coats. You have to do a minimum of 3-4 coats till you don't see any base color anymore.
