Good catch. Especially with the receiver on the back. Though he might have been going for the lowest attachment point.

It's just quick thinking, unscripted, cameras in your face, and he's a kid. Sometimes offroad you do some sketchy things to make sure vehicles don't roll off Cliffs. They do a lot of stuff that I probably wouldn't record and put on the internet, and I'm sure you would never do.

He needed a low attachment point. I would rather have seen the line secured to the frame.

In an emergency situation, grab anything you can - I get that. But, this was not that type of situation.

I know, everybody needs to learn. I just assumed Matt would train his helpers/staff a little better.

Good point about the “emergency”. The truck had been there for hours.

    1) He's supposed to be a professional, and his employees should be professional as well. If the kid is new, *everything* he does should be double checked.

    2) As a professional, "sketchy" shouldn't even be in your vocabulary. The fact that he films himself doing some of these sketchy recoveries honestly does a disservice to the actual professionals out there.

    3) There was no reason whatsoever for "quick thinking". The truck had been there for probably hours, and no one was in danger.

    4) You say "camera in your face" like it's the paparazzi chasing after a celebrity or something. It's a youtube channel of his own making. If the cameras compromise safety, he should shut them off and focus on his job.

I definitely would consider him a professional at what he does, viewers like a little sketchy in there, or no one would watch a boring recovery!!!!

If he is purposefully making recoveries "a little sketchy" just for a more entertaining youtube channel, that's asinine.

Maybe. Although just the idea that I, some rando on the interwebs sees weaknesses in a professional's off-road recovery techniques kinda says something. I have no doubt this guy has lots of experience and knowledge as a tow truck driver. I've said before it really seems like this guy is a tow truck driver turned off-road recovery guy and uses his tow truck knowledge for off road recoveries, and I don't think those are two skill sets with 100% overlap.

There are outfits like Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery that seem to have a much more measured approach to these types of situations. They also have a youtube channel, and while probably not as entertaining of a channel, they seem to come at their rescues with a little more measured response. They take their time, travel in teams with multiple rigs, have winches permanently installed, and take their time because by the time they get there, there is no emergency.

Apples and oranges comparison. Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery is a volunteer group that plucks vehicles out of sketch spots (like their video with the pile of Tundras in the snow). This is a hobby for these people so they're not in much of a rush and can take all day to winch someone out.

Matt's Off Road Recovery is a towing business and 99% of their jobs are yanking stuck jeeps and side by sides out of the sand at their local dunes. In the sand snatching someone out is the easiest/fastest method and time is money.

Yeah, I've never seen anything unsafe and Matt always asks for help in potentially dodgy situations.

He has also explained in many videos how most modern vehicles don’t have good tow points so they have to get creative sometimes. Especially when they’re pulling out things like Kias and camper vans that have no business off-road in the first place.

Not to mention those recoveries make better YouTube videos. I’m sure for every vid he posts they do a dozen super standard boring recoveries that don’t get put online.
