Well, it's still not here. Complained about the delivery driver being lazy again..

Conflicted on how I want to set it all up. Had it all good to go in my head with FreeNAS and Plex plugin but the more I read the more options I find lol

I heard the 11th Gen isn't going to be that good/worth it. Is this true?

Depends who you ask lol. It's been confusing. Intel had a retailer break their agreements and sell a bunch of 11700K and 11900K chips over two weeks ago. So reviews are out there and they aren't great. Who knows though, maybe things change with a BIOS update. One thing that worries most though is that the CPUs seem to draw 300 watts regularly and have been tuned to accept 100 c normal operating temperatures. That can't be good long term.

Well, to finish off a new build I bought a 3070 off of ebay. I'm happy/sad about that as I could have gotten a 3080 and had money to spare for what I paid for it. GG 2021.

It was a hard hit for my wallet that week because I actually bought two 3070s. One off of reddit because it was a decent price but then I bit the bullet and bought the 3070 that I really wanted off of Ebay (Asus Rog STRIX). Luckily I was able to sell that first card for what I paid for it but for awhile there I had two 3070s on hand and almost 2.5k gone from the ole wallet. I hate these prices.

Which CPU again? If it's Intel 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th Gen you might not see much of a drop without deliding. Ultimately your weakest link might be the TIM breaking down, which is unfortunately common on older Intel parts. They really should of stuck to solder.

Picked up this Nas with 24TB for $375

    Screenshot_20210324-200528.jpg

I know it is not the best but the price was right, it was a renewed item, so hope it is not thrashed. My only fear is malware.

I am looking to put the drives in a Nas with 10gbe and want to know what others use and like

So you're scavenging the drives from this WD refurb and putting them in something else with 10 GBe networking? My advice, and I've never done something to this level, but you would want to do a custom build for that level of NAS. Linus has a few videos on this. By the time you pay for 10 GBe built into something, you're going to pay for a lot of features you don't need. Grab a Ryzen 2nd Gen CPU, a board with lots of SATA ports, slap in a 10GBe card, and install whatever OS for your NAS that best suits your needs. Keep in mind if you want to have 10 GBe access to the server throughout your home, you're looking at a pricey 10 GBe router and several not that cheap 10 GBe adapter cards to make it work.

I know this is not a computer build, but good point, I guess the intent is to backup data and make sure my computers, pictures, music, videos and phones are backed up. March 31st is national backup day!

Curious to see if I can reload linux and maybe just goof around with the hardware, but I may just send it to my brother and have him put it on his network so I can do my backups over the VPN we have between our houses. It would be nice if this device would do a VPN direct, then I could just use all his bandwidth to have an offsite backup. If my house burns to the ground or plops into the ocean and I have my family nd our data then we are good. Trying to get to a digital footprint and have all my papers on disk :)good and bad:( if I do not have electricity but he has solar...

I am not sure it is a refurb vs someone bought it and said $1300 was too much to pay or thought it was a POS device, but when I was looking at the diskless one for $316
    upload_2021-3-24_23-42-55.jpg
the 24TB showed one for $375 and it was my inherit nature to add to cart and checkout in less than 30 seconds because it seemed too good to be true. I figured it is Amazon and with free shipping and free returns
    upload_2021-3-24_23-48-10.jpg
Just hope the Missing bonus material is not the hard drives or I get it with 250MB Segate drives installed. Then I would have to exchange it...

Found that some of the Renewed stuff is really good and new. That is how I got my router.

Hope to find an Nvidia RTX 3090 on there in Very Good Condition Missing the Bonus Material... Anyone buy one of those lately?

4710MQ. Doesn't have a TIM. It's a 47W TDP. The AS5 helped a lot compared to the original paste, but I'll try the Kryonaut to see if i can improve temps further. If not, I'll try to get my hands on a 4712MQ, which is a 37W TDP.

First thing you need to do is pull each disk and run an extended SMART Test on it. Then it would be a good idea if you can "test" them before you go to use them. Being as I use Unraid, I just run the preclear script but Im sure theres other programs that do the same sort of deal.

Sadly those type of unit, it isnt to uncommon for someone to swap the drives with ones that are failing/have issues. Like you said, Amazon has good return policies so its easy to do.

10GBe isnt to bad price wise to do if you only are wanting one or two devices connected to it. Least for now. Especially if you dont mind using older, used prosumer/enterprise gear. Definitely still a cost to it over 1gbe though!

I currently have two devices that are direct connected via crossover cable and the work well, I was looking to have very few 10GBe devices so a switch will not be required right now. Running the smart test is a great idea.

Just built this at work. $2500 budget

    Use: GIS workstation

    i9-10900KF
    32GB (2x16) 3200 G-Skill Ripsaw
    ASUS TUF Gaming OC 3070
    MSI MEG Z490 Unify
    WD Black SN750 1TB M.2 (Data)
WD Blue 500GB SSD SATAIII (Boot)
    2x Mirrored WD Blue 2TB 5400RPM (Backups)
    Noctua NH-D15S CPU Cooler
    Seasonic Focus PX-850 Platinum
    Corsair Carbide 275R

Honestly, the 3070 was super overkill. I was falling back onto a 1660Ti due to lack of availability for anything more powerful, and because most of my work isn't super graphically intense. However, we didn't want to be building a new PC with parts that are several years old. IT put out a request to local vendors and got the 3070 for around $800. Score!

Not really scientific testing, but with stock paste, the chip hit 100°C instantly under P95.

Ran P95 for 10 minutes. Room temp 75°F.
Artic Silver 5: eventually hit 100° about 8 minutes in.
Kryonaut: never exceeded 91° in the 10 minute run.

I had the Corsair Carbide 275R for a build a few years ago. Watch your temperatures under workload. I was never very happy with the airflow.
